Toddler Friendly Villas from Freelance Holidays

Mediterranean villa specialist Freelance Holidays is highlighting properties ideal for families with tots and pre-school children, with a week’s stay for four from only £863.

A policy of any-day-arrival, and any-length-of-stay (suggested five nights minimum) means families can mix and match daytime flights for civilised travel times, and travel cots and high chairs are provided on request either free or at a negligible charge. Beds are always made up on arrival and towels are provided too, making packing/unpacking easy.

“There are no hard and fast rules about what makes a property child-friendly,” says managing director Paul Fogg. “Every aspect – inside and out – influences our recommendation. We’ve been selecting villas for decades, and as grandparents we understand what is important!”

On Crete, Villa Maragoudi has a small circular pool only 50cm deep next to and separate from the main pool. Both are salt-water (no chlorine) and are close to the house. This is perfect for an extended family with grandparents because two of the four bedrooms are downstairs and two are on the self-contained first floor complete with its own living room and kitchen as well as shower/wc. While there is a wonderful dining terrace with outdoor as well as indoor kitchen, the village of Armeni is no more than 500m away where, as well as a minimarket and taverna, there’s a sweet shop for the children. A seven night stay in June is £1283 in total, for up to eight people.

The pool at the Finca S’Hort Misser in rural Mallorca is set on an upper gated terrace. Corner steps make for easy entry, and the pool is chlorine-free. Olive and citrus trees offer shady spots for afternoon naps. The farmhouse has been renovated to retain many original features and the country-style kitchen is pretty as well as practical. Three bedrooms sleep up to six. A seven night stay in May starts at £1023 for six people, saving £120.

There’s no pool at either of the two Professore Beach Houses on Sardinia, but with a sandy cove 90 metres from the garden gate, that’s no hardship! Built by a local teacher (hence the name) these adjacent properties offer simple but modern accommodation for four (+1 on a sofa bed) in an idyllic setting shaded by pine trees on the edge of the resort of Cala Liberotto. A week’s hire of either Beach House in June starts at just £863.

Flights and car hire excluded. Availability/prices correct at date of issue.

Crete Villas for Easter Celebrations, from £597 for a family of five

Mediterranean villa specialist Freelance Holidays is highlighting villas on Crete just perfect for Easter celebrations – both for UK holiday dates and the Greek Orthodox Easter.

“Late April temperatures in Crete can easily reach 20 degrees,” says managing director Paul Fogg, “and when your villa is only a stroll from the village square it’s easy to meet the locals – and if you’re there over 26-28 April – to join in their Easter celebrations.”

For example, Villa Avra has been reduced for arrivals on or after 20 April, with seven nights starting 20 April now just £597 (down from £793) and a week starting 27 April now £621 (down from £913).

This modern three-bedroom (sleeps five) villa combines contemporary kitchen and shower rooms with the character of exposed stonework. On three levels, there are far-reaching views over olive groves from the pool terrace. It is a five-minute drive to the tiny village of Maza where there’s a taverna on the village square, with more facilities at Vrisses 3kms away and the beach at Georgioupolis only 6kms away.

Other options close to welcoming villages are Villa Maragoudi within 500 metres of Armeni, available for seven nights starting 26 April at £653 (reduced from £811) for this four-bedroom villa sleeping eight. Set behind high garden walls, it is a perfect base from which to join in village events from the torchlit procession to the roast lamb on Easter Day.

A further 300 metres up the hill is the pink-washed Villa Galania, a two-bedroom property with bags of indoor and outdoor space ideal for a small family or a couple. Arrive 22 April for seven nights at £653, saving £210.

Flights to Chania and car hire excluded. Availability/prices correct at date of issue.

Village Villas for Easter Celebrations: save up to £350

Freelance Holidays is highlighting its ‘village villas’ on Crete – with savings – available in April, when British and Greek dates for Easter co-incide.

“Rural Crete celebrates Easter in style,” says managing director Paul Fogg, “and when your villa is just a stroll from the village square it’s easy to join in, from Good Friday processions to Easter Day fireworks and spit-roasted lamb feasts: the locals welcome everyone!”

The sleepy village of Samonas is set on a shoulder of the White Mountains, just 12kms from the sea. The village taverna and an ancient Byzantine church are only a couple of minutes’ walk away from Villa Vigla, while five kms down the valley is the larger village of Stylos. The imaginatively converted 200-year old house sleeps four in two bedrooms, has a pretty courtyard, freeform pool and shady garden. Easter holiday hire is just £99 per night saving £30 per night, or £210 on a seven-night stay.

In contrast to Samonas, the village of Gavalochori boasts two cafenions, two tavernas, a bakery, mini-market and a handicraft co-operative, as well as a church, making Villa Metapothia a great holiday home for friends or a large family. The six-bedroom house with fantastic views to the sea is little more than 300 metres from the village and was built by Freelance Holidays’ operations director Diane and her husband Yiannis, so it combines both Cretan style with superb facilities.  Easter dates are now reduced to £199 per night (saving £50 per night or £350 on a week’s stay for up to twelve people).

Other discounted village villas include Villa Galania at Armeni (£119 per night over Easter) and Villa Faye at Vrisses (£114 per night at Easter).

In all cases, quoted prices are to rent the entire villa. Flights and car hire not included. Freelance Holidays’ policy of any-day-arrival and any-length-of-stay allows travellers to mix and match low-cost flights for flexible and great value holidays.

Spring Bank Holiday savings in villas with private pools…

Vintage Travel, specialists in villas with private swimming pools, has announced Spring Bank Holiday savings at a selection of properties in a choice of destinations including Greece and Mallorca.

These include To Throni in Kefalonia, a sophisticated and stylish country hideaway – sleeping four in two bedrooms, both en suite – perched on a hillside in the hamlet of Tselendata with views to the seaside village of Fiscardo.  In the grounds of this chic property there is a private swimming pool, an outdoor dining space and sun terraces.  An unmade track leads down to Foki beach where there is a simple taverna.  A week from 29 May is now priced at £1395, saving £155.

In Crete, Laouteris – a traditional cottage, carefully renovated and retaining many original features – enjoys breathtaking views over olive groves, orchards and vineyards to the sea.  The villa sleeps four in two bedrooms (both en suite) and in its grounds has a private swimming pool and sun and shaded terraces.  A three km drive leads to Triopetra beach, overlooked by the ancient chapel of Profitis IIias.  Seven nights from 31 May now cost £1050, a reduction of £200.

Turning to Mallorca, Busqueroles Petit – originally a shepherd’s refuge – is a pretty cottage offering the ‘best of both worlds’ – a beautiful rural location but with easy access to the Roman town of Pollenca (a 10-mintue drive).  The property is set in extensive grounds, home to a private swimming pool, open and covered terraces and a built-in barbeque.  A week from 28 May is now priced at £995, saving £155.

Warming up in Crete Villas from £12.50 per night!

Villa company Freelance Holidays says the average temperature in Crete – the most southerly of the Greek islands – is 17C in April, when their beautiful traditional-style villas cost as little as £75 per night to rent, or just £12.50 per person per night when six share.

Flexible enough to allow any-day-arrival to match with the least popular and therefore cheapest low-cost flights, Freelance Holidays has 60 hand-picked holiday homes across Crete, including the resort of Stalos on the north-west coast. Stalos has a Blue Flag beach and is only 15 minutes along the coast road from the Venetian harbour of Chania.

Villa Panos is a three-bedroom, sleeps six villa a five minute drive from the beach, in Panos (which means ‘upper’) Stalos. It has mountain views in one direction, and sea views in the other. Recently-built, yet in rustic style with exposed stone and colour-washed beams, Villa Panos has a freeform pool and private sun terrace as well as a pretty garden and plenty of quiet corners for reading in the shade or snoozing in the sun.

At just £75 per night (minimum five night stay) in April, rising to £89 per night through most of May (when the temperature rises to 24C), Villa Panos offers outstanding value for families with pre-school kids, or friends holidaying together.

A couple of hundred yards around the hillside, set in its own garden and with similar sea views, is Villa Clio. With a private pool, this villa also is around 900 metres’ stroll from Panos Stalos tavernas and the mini-market. Also sleeping six in three bedrooms, this is priced at the same rate as Villa Panos, with a week in April only £525.

Both villas are a stroll from what Paul Fogg of Freelance Holidays says is ‘probably the best taverna in western Crete’. Taverna Leventis in the centre of Old Stalos is run by the Chatzimanolakis family, with recipes passed from grandmother Sophia to mama Eftichia and now on to her sons Giorgos and Panagiotis. Specialities of the house include kremmydopita (onion pies), apaki (smoked pork) and avronies (octopus cooked with aromatic wild greens).

All prices exclude flights and car hire. 01789 297705,
