Breakaway to Ireland’s Ancient East with Irish Ferries

Ireland’s beautiful south-east is a comfortable four-hour cruise from Pembroke on Irish Ferries’ Isle of Inishmore, with the port of Rosslare offering easy access to Counties Wexford, Waterford and Wicklow this summer.

For a short break packed with interest, visit Waterford City (see waterfordtourism.com), which was founded by the Vikings in 914AD. Stroll through the ‘Viking Triangle’ and visit Reginald’s Tower to see original artefacts, view the excellent Medieval Museum and Georgian treasures at the Bishop’s Palace.

The 29-room Athenaeum House Hotel is a great Waterford base, quietly set in gardens running down to the River Suir, with city views. A three-night midweek break this summer costs from £722 per couple when sharing a double room, including a full Irish breakfast each morning, complimentary parking and return ferry travel.

Alternatively, there are family-friendly holiday cottages in seaside resorts like Dunmore East, where a week’s holiday for mum, dad and up to three children under 16 can be enjoyed for a great-value £899 for the weeks starting 18 or 25 August or £985 for the weeks starting 21 or 28 July, 4, 11 and 18 August.

Seacliff holiday cottages are set on the cliff top beside Dunmore East’s golf club and 650 metres from the sandy cove of Counsellors Strand. Each modern holiday home offers open-plan living, an ensuite double, a twin and a single room to sleep five, and there’s an onsite playground.

Seacliff is 90 minutes’ drive from Irish Ferries’ port at Rosslare, using the charming ferry to the River Suir. There are beaches, boat trips and great sightseeing, with Hook Lighthouse across the bay and historic Waterford half an hour’s drive.

Peak season Family Holidays in Ireland from £899 with Irish Ferries

Pack the kids, the buckets and spades and all the bags you can cram into the car, then sail away with Irish Ferries Holidays to a fabulous family holiday from as little as £899 in total.

That’s for a seven-night stay in a coastal holiday cottage in August, and includes return ferry travel for the car, two adults and up to three kids under 16.

Seacliff holiday cottages are set on the cliff top at Dunmore East in County Waterford, beside the golf club and 650 metres from the sandy cove of Counsellors Strand. Dunmore East was the pretty backdrop to BBC One’s ‘Redwater’ last year. Each modern holiday home offers open-plan living, an ensuite double, a twin and a single room to sleep five, and there’s an onsite playground.

Seacliff is 90 minutes’ drive from Irish Ferries’ port at Rosslare, using the charming ferry to the River Suir. There are beaches, boat trips and great sightseeing, with Viking Waterford within half an hour’s drive, and Hook Lighthouse across the bay.

A week at Seacliff starting 18 or 25 August is only £899; weeks starting 21 or 28 July, 4, 11 and 18 August are £985 – including cruise ferry travel.

In the south-west, five hours’ drive from Irish Ferries’ port in Dublin, and about the same drive time from Rosslare, is the colourful seaside town of Waterville in County Kerry on the Wild Atlantic Way.

Irish Ferries’ featured holiday cottages are only 750 yards from the sea, with traditional pubs, watersports, golf and boat trips all on the doorstep. Waterville holiday cottages have four bedrooms for flexibility, and the family pooch (if it has a Pet Passport) is welcome too.

A week at Waterville starting 18 or 25 August is only £1,046; weeks starting 21 or 28 July, 4, 11 and 18 August are £1,118 – including cruise ferry travel.

Irish Ferries: Save 10% on self-drive Holidays booked by 13 March

Holiday cottages, hotels and B&Bs booked as part of an Irish Ferries self-drive short break or holiday package are all discounted by 10% if booked by 13 March.

The deal applies to holidays taken at Easter and in peak summer – in fact for any departure date before 20 December 2017.

At Easter, for example, any seven night stay between 8–21 April is reduced to £657 for a family of up to five at Waterville Holiday Homes.

These four-star standard detached houses are on the edge of the colourful village of Waterville in County Kerry. They are set in an enclave just a couple of minutes walk from the village and 750 yards from the sea’s edge. Each has a family-friendly open plan living space downstairs, and four bedrooms for maximum flexibility (plus three bath/shower rooms).

Waterville is on the Wild Atlantic Way scenic drive, and as well as spectacular surroundings there’s plenty to do in the area: fabulous beaches, boat trips, golf courses and horse riding.

Indoor attractions nearby include the Sea Synergy Marine Awareness centre where children can learn what goes on beneath the Wild Atlantic ocean, plus craft shops and art galleries.  There are welcoming pubs and restaurants, so there’s no need to self-cater all the time.

The price of £657 for a seven night holiday is valid for bookings made by Monday 13 March after which it reverts to full price of £730.

Ireland’s Top Tourist Towns will welcome more visitors in 2015

Two Irish holiday resorts, one at each end of the Wild Atlantic Way scenic drive, have been voted Top Tourist Towns for 2014, and Irish Ferries Holidays is forecasting increased demand for holidays in both locations in 2015.

“Bookings for our holidays to Ireland’s north-west doubled this year, thanks to the publicity surrounding the Wild Atlantic Way,” says head of holidays Ann Pye, “and we’re increasing our capacity along the southern route in anticipation of 2015 demand.”

In the north-west, Westport in County Mayo, won the ‘best small tourist town’ award, and Kinsale, at the southern extremity of the route in County Cork takes the ‘best large tourist town’ crown.

In and around Kinsale, Irish Ferries Holidays is newly-featuring Actons Hotel on the colourful town’s quayside, as well as the Carlton Kinsale Hotel just outside the town, and the luxurious Kilcatty Lodge B&B nearby.

In 2015, a week-long holiday that includes ferry crossings to Ireland and six nights at Actons Hotel on a B&B basis (plus one night in Dublin before the journey home) costs from £335 per person, based on two travelling together by car, and sharing a double/twin room.

In County Mayo, six nights at the Westport Coast Hotel on the shores of Clew Bay within an easy walk of the town centre, with one night in Dublin before the journey home, costs from £365 per person including ferry crossings to Ireland. That is based on two people travelling together by car and sharing a double/twin room.
