Top 5 Lock-free Canal Cruises from Waterways Holidays

Waterways Holidays, the online booking portal and authority on holidays afloat, has chosen its top five routes for easy boating weekends on Britain’s canals.

“If you’re considering a narrowboat holiday but the idea of operating the locks is a little daunting, we can recommend weekend cruising routes that involve no locks at all,” says managing director Nigel Richards.

  1. Ashby Canal

This lock-free canal runs for 22 miles through scenic countryside and pretty villages. From the base at Stoke Golding places of interest within easy reach include the site of the Battle of Bosworth and the steam railway society at Shackerstone. Three nights’ hire starts at £720

  1. Lancaster Canal

This is a ‘contour canal’ which follows the line of the land so no locks are required along its 41 miles. A choice of bases means boaters may visit the City of Lancaster or lovely Morecambe Bay. A three-night weekend starts at £435

  1. Basingstoke Canal

A superb canal for wildlife lovers, with up to 25 dragonfly species to spot, crested grebe and other waterfowl plus water voles, and even bats which roost in the Greywell Tunnel.  Weekend hire from £590 For three nights.

  1. Monmouthshire & Brecon Canal

The ‘Mon & Brec’ arguably boasts the most picturesque views of Britain’s canal network, as it winds through the Brecon Beacons National Park. From the base at Goytre it’s lock-free cruising all the way to Llangyndir. A three-night weekend starts at £623

  1. Worcester and Birmingham Canal

Great for city sightseeing!  Moor in Gas Street Basin and explore the many attractions Birmingham has to offer, from the Sea Life Centre and Cadbury World to the amazing Library and the famous Bullring Shopping Centre. Weekend hire from £645 For three nights.

Visit Birmingham and Cadbury World by Narrowboat

Waterways Holidays’ top tip for families this Easter is to hire a narrowboat from one of their Warwickshire hire bases to visit Birmingham’s family-friendly sights.

Canal bases at Tardebigge and Alvechurch are both on the Worcester and Birmingham Canal, making Birmingham a great short break for first-time boaters.

Family-orientated attractions with special Easter events include Cadbury World, where, in addition to its regular chocolate-themed sights and tours, the Easter weekend includes multiple performances of two child-friendly stage shows: Partytime with Freddo, and Story Time with the Caramel Bunny. Family tickets start at £51.

Cadbury World is a short hop by bus or train from the canal boat moorings in the famous Gas Street Basin, at the heart of a historic complex offering great cafes, restaurants and shops.  This is a great spot from which to visit the city sights, from its amazing Library to the National Sea Life Centre. On the return journey, the canal also passes close to the famous Botanical Gardens.

A three-night weekend break from Tardebigge, boarding ‘Rowan 4’ on Friday 30 March, costs as little as £640 for a family of four. This 48-feet long narrowboat has central heating, a double cabin for mum and dad and comfortable seats in the saloon which convert to two single beds for children.

The shower room has flush wc, and the galley kitchen is well-equipped for self-catering, from the hob, grill and oven to microwave and fridge. TV/DVD, CD/Radio and WiFi complete the package.  The boat is dog-friendly too, with no charge for one pet.  Car parking at base, damage waiver, initial tuition and loan of buoyancy aids is all included in this price: just pay for fuel as used.

Rowan 4 is just one of hundreds of narrowboats available for Easter breaks from over 80 different start points across the UK.

Coventry by Canal Boat with Waterways Holidays

The spotlight is on Coventry, Britain’s City of Culture in 2021, and a rewarding weekend destination right now, according to Waterways Holidays, which suggests hiring a narrowboat to gain an extra appreciation of the city’s contribution to our industrial heritage.

Coventry Canal Basin is at the head of the Coventry Canal, built in 1769 by famous engineer James Brindley. It connects with the Trent & Mersey, North Oxford, Ashby and the Birmingham and Fazeley canals, and played a vital role in getting goods from Birmingham to London for almost 200 years.

The Canal Basin survived the WW2 bombing, and today the Listed buildings around the Basin are full of cafes, restaurants and independent shops, making it a great base for a weekend. From here, it is only a six minute walk to the excellent Coventry Transport Museum and 12 minutes to the Cathedral – both the evocative ruins and the glorious new building.

An afternoon’s exploration along the Coventry Canal, perhaps branching off onto the North Oxford Canal, gives a sense of the city’s location in the heart of England, where quiet towpaths and canal-side pubs are waiting to be discovered.

In Spring 2018, a three-night rental of Dove Valley, a 58-feet long narrowboat, costs from £660 fully-inclusive of fuel, parking at base, instruction, loan of buoyancy aids and damage waiver. There’s also a welcome pack of essentials, including a bottle of wine.

Centrally-heated, and fully-equipped for self-catering, there are two cabins and two bathrooms (one shower) to comfortably accommodate two couples or a family, with convertible seating in the saloon for ‘plus two’.

Waterways Holidays, the UK’s leading boating holidays agency, has a host of short break options – many of them discounted – this autumn.
“With all the comforts of home, including central heating or multi fuel stoves (or sometimes both), modern narrowboats are well equipped for cosy out of season breaks,” says Waterways Holidays’ managing director Nigel Richards.

Current offers for autumn short breaks include:

Shropshire Union Canal, from Middlewich in Cheshire, board ‘Ash’ for a three-night weekend starting Friday 29 September and pay £788, saving £337. This spacious 65-feet narrowboat has a double cabin and two singles, with a large saloon that offers easy chairs for relaxing, as well as a dining table and chairs for meals. ‘Ash’ has a traditional wood-burning stove in a corner of the saloon, as well as full central heating.

Grand Union Canal, from Foxton in Leicestershire, set off on the ‘Artful Dodger’ on Monday 2 October for four nights, and pay £780, saving £260. The 60-feet narrowboat sleeps two to four people, with a comfortable double cabin and shower/wc at the back of the boat, and a large saloon in the bow. A modest damage waiver charge applies.

Leeds & Liverpool Canal, from Reedley in Lancashire, board ‘Marbled Wren’ on Friday 6 October for three nights, and pay just £576, saving £143. This smart narrowboat is only 47 feet long and perfect for a couple, with a double cabin aft (with TV), and a comfy sofa in the saloon. It’s pet-friendly at no extra charge and there’s even free WiFi.

Tasselweed: newly-available on the Grand Union Canal

The intriguingly-named ‘Tasselweed’ is newly available for hire on the Grand Union Canal through Waterways Holidays, the leading boating holiday specialist.

“This beautiful boat packs a lot of features into its 70-feet length,” says Waterways Holidays managing director Nigel Richards.

“There is central heating, air-conditioning and bow-thruster technology for easy manoeuvring, two cabins, both ensuite with full-size showers, flush loos and basins, hairdryer, plus a comfortable saloon with TV/DVD, radio/CD.

“The galley not only has an oven, hob, microwave and fridge but toaster and dishwasher. There’s even a pull-down ironing board and iron in the rear cabin!” adds Nigel.

The ‘cruiser stern’ and bow areas offers generous outdoor seating and Tasselweed is ideal for a family or two couples.  The narrowboat is based at Weedon in rural Northamptonshire. From here, there’s a wide choice of canal routes available including the historic town of Warwick with its impressive castle, and the pretty villages along the route of the Oxford Canal.

A week’s rental of Tasselweed this summer starts at £1570 in July, or well under £400 a head for four people. Everything is included, from bed linen and towels to fuel, car parking during the holiday, tuition and loan of buoyancy aids.

“Canal holidays are more popular than ever,” says Nigel, “with TV coverage – Channel Five’s Barging Brits in the Sun is the latest – inspiring people to take a holiday in the slow lane on Britain’s 3,500 kms of navigable canals and rivers.”
