Solo Trips to Embrace or Escape Christmas

Singles holiday company Friendship Travel says it’s not too late for single travellers to find a sociable Christmas break, with options for embracing, or escaping the festivities.

In the UK, a three-night stay at the four-star Crowne Plaza Hotel in West Drayton – easy to reach by road or rail – is £595 for a package starting on 24 December that includes sole occupancy of a double room (with free WiFi, coffee machine and fridge); dinner with wine on Christmas Eve followed by dancing; breakfast on Christmas Day morning, a celebratory glass of Prosecco before turkey and all the trimmings for lunch, and a light  buffet dinner; breakfast on Boxing Day and a formal black-tie dinner dance on Boxing Day night. Guests depart after breakfast on 27 December.

The entire stay is Hosted by Friendship Travel, balancing sociable activities like a quiz and walking in nearby Colney Valley Park, with ‘me time’ including complimentary use of the hotel’s large indoor pool and health club.

Alternatively, single travellers can escape to Morocco, and the four-star Iberostar Founty Beach Hotel right on the beach at Agadir. Flying from Gatwick on 22 December the package costs from £1537 and includes flights, transfers, seven nights in a garden view room, and the hotel’s excellent All-inclusive programme (all meals, snacks, teas, coffees, soft and alcoholic drinks) with day and evening entertainment.

All evening meals are enjoyed around one large table, and the whole week is Hosted by a member of Friendship Travel’s team. The recently-renovated hotel has a huge freeform pool, atrium-style lobby and stylish bars feature, along with Moroccan dishes and show-cooking station in the restaurant, which adds variety to the all-inclusive board basis.

8 Solo Ski Options from Friendship Travel this winter

Friendship Travel is offering solo skiers the chance to ski in eight European resorts this season, including two exclusive chalet houseparties in France.

All seven-night prices are based on guests enjoying their own room with no single supplement to pay, and include flights, resort transfers, breakfast every day, afternoon tea every day and dinner with wine on five evenings, as well as the support of chalet staff.

Novice and intermediate skiers are recommended to book one of the two exclusive houseparties, which also include six mornings of ski school, for either ski or snowboarding, within the package price.

The two exclusive houseparties are Chalet Maya in Alpe d’Huez, where a week’s skiing, with lessons, starts at just £839. The chalet offers simple accommodation in a traditional alpine chalet sleeping up to eight guests.

Chalet Refuge et Lodge is the exclusive houseparty in Serre Chevalier, where a week’s skiing, including lessons, costs from £1035, with a Christmas departure from £1186.

Other resorts where Friendship Travel offers singles skiing based in larger hotels include St Christoph in Austria, Meribel, La Plagne, Val d’Isere, Tignes and Les Deux Alpes in France.

“I’m a skier myself, and like many travel entrepreneurs, my early days in the industry included repping in the Alps,” says Friendship Travel’s founder and managing director Colum McLornan, “and that experience has helped to shape our programme for single skiers.”

New Winter Sun Break for Solo Travellers: Friendship Travel

New in Friendship Travel’s 2018/2019 winter sun programme of sociable holidays for single travellers is Tunisia, with a week at the Iberostar Diar El Andalus leading in at only £668: outstanding value for a four-star All-inclusive holiday that includes sole occupancy of a double room with no single supplement to pay.

That’s for seven-night holidays departing Gatwick on 20 or 27 January 2019, and also includes transfers and the support of a Friendship Travel Host throughout. Other dates are 11 November 2018 and 24 March 2019.

The hotel is beside the beach in Port El Kantaoui, set in expansive gardens next to the championship golf course, and 15 minutes’ stroll from the resort’s marina.

As on all Friendship Travel holidays, travellers are free to be as independent or sociable as they wish: the anchor points of each day being mealtimes – especially dinner – when the group comes together to eat around one large table.

Other winter sun highlights include:

  • Morocco – also new to the programme – from £975 for a week’s All-inclusive at the Iberostar Foundy Beach Hotel on Agadir’s fabulous beach.
  • Six departures to the five-star Sea Breeze Beach House in Barbados, from £2150 for seven nights’ All-inclusive in St Lawrence Gap.
  • Kenya, which now has five departure dates for this small group escorted tour which combines a safari in Tsavo East National Park with down-time on the coast at Mombasa. Prices from just £1545 for eight nights.

20th Summer for Single Travellers takes off with New Holiday in Portugal

Friendship Travel welcomes its first guests to the Real Marina Hotel on the Algarve this weekend, marking the start of its 20th summer season of sociable holidays for single travellers.

This new holiday is based in the coastal town of Olhao within Portugal’s Ria Formosa Natural Park.  This is ‘the other side of the Algarve’, east of Faro.  Olhau’s old town is a warren of cobbled streets; there’s a quayside fish market (designed by Gustave Eiffel) and a harbour protected from the Atlantic by a chain of islands that offer beautiful sandy beaches and a haven for wildlife.

Each holiday is Hosted by a Friendship Travel team member, and guests enjoy four included excursions: to Faro’s historic centre; to the town of Vila Real de Santo Antonia on the Spanish border; a local cookery school demo; and a boat trip around Olhao’s tidal estuary and islands.

The Real Marina Hotel is only 500m along the seafront from the market. This 144-room five-star has a first-floor outdoor pool with superb sea views, a spa and indoor pool.  As on all Friendship Travel holidays, guests have their own room, with no single supplement to pay.

Prices for holidays between now and October start at £1135, including flights from Gatwick (regional departures available at a supplement), transfers, seven nights’ accommodation with breakfast each day, two lunches and four dinners with wine, four planned excursions and the support of a Friendship Travel Host.

Other holidays for single travellers with their first departures this month include a week on the Costa Brava in the resort of Pineda de Mar where excursions to Barcelona, Girona, Hostalric, Canet de Mar and a Caltalan cooker demo are included in the package, which starts at £885 per person.
And for five-star sun, sea and sand, a week at the beachfront Lindos Memories hotel on Rhodes starts at £1290.

Spring Singles Break in Essaouira, Morocco

Sociable singles holiday company Friendship Travel is returning to the Riad Mimouna in the UNESCO World Heritage town of Essaouira as soon as it re-opens after a three-month closure for refurbishment.

Flying from Luton direct to Essaouira on 6 March 2018, this four-night break is Hosted by a British member of Friendship Travel’s team, who lives in Morocco and knows the city well, so that the small group of guests – typically six to ten single travellers – waste no time finding the best cafes and shops.

The four-star Riad Mimouna is built into the sea wall and laid out over four floors around its inner courtyard. The hotel is next to the pedestrianised medina and five minutes’ walk from the port and the souk.

The rooftop terrace restaurant offers fabulous views along the city ramparts and over the beach beloved by kite-surfers and runners. The new decor follows traditional Islamic designs in rich colours, complemented by contemporary shower rooms.

Friendship Travel’s package currently starts at £559 and includes flights (hand luggage only), transfers, sole occupancy of a standard double or twin room, breakfast each morning, two dinners at the hotel and the support of the Host throughout.  On the other two evenings, the group eats at local restaurants at own expense.

2018 is Friendship Travel’s 20th season of offering holidays for single travellers.

Other holidays in Morocco include Marrakech city breaks and walking in the High Atlas.
