Basket of Crete Treats Welcomes Guests at Brand New Villa

A brand-new villa on Crete, within easy reach of Rethymnon on the north coast, is newly featured by Freelance Holidays just in time for peak season holidays.

Built on the footprint of an old family property, Villa Xagnado is a cool white cube with private pool offering sleek, open-plan living perfect for a couple or family of four.

While the villa is new, the welcome from owners Stratos and Margarita is warmly old-fashioned: honey from their own bees, home-produced olive oil, wine and raki are all in the welcome basket.

Outside the kitchen door, beside a new terrace, is the original outdoor kitchen, with a traditional wood oven, sink and built-in BBQ for evening meals accompanied by cicadas singing in the gnarled olive trees. On nights when guests don’t want to cook or drive out for dinner, a family-owned taverna in the next village offers a dinner delivery service.

Villa Xagnado – whose name means view – has a hilltop spot outside the tiny village of Kato Valsamonero. The White Mountains dominate the view, though Rethymon and north-coast beaches are no more than 25 minutes’ drive.

A ground-floor double bedroom makes this contemporary, well-furnished villa a great choice for a couple looking for privacy and space, while a twin-bedded room (and additional shower room) on the upper floor makes it a good option for a small family.

Being newly built, July and August availability is excellent, with seven nights in August at £1633, and late season breaks only £891 (excluding flights and car hire).

Mediterranean island villa specialist Freelance Holidays offers the flexibility of any-day-arrival and any-length-of-stay over five nights, making it easy to mix and match flights to create great-value holidays of odd durations.

July savings in character properties with private pools in Tuscany and Mallorca

The opportunity to enjoy savings of up to £291 on seven-night holidays in an impressive 18th century stone mill tucked away in a valley north of Lucca in Tuscany is the latest offering from Vintage Travel, specialists in villas with private pools.

Il Muliono sleeps six in three en suite bedrooms and retains elements of a traditional Tuscan home with exposed stone walls, wooden shutters and huge wooden beams.  It is the perfect place to relax and unwind – it surrounded by woodland bordered by a babbling brook – and in its large grounds there is a private swimming pool, terraced gardens and a dining terrace.  A five-minute drive (or a 20-minute walk) leads to the bustling village of Fornoli, while slightly further afield (four kms) is the spa town of Bagni di Lucca.

A week’s holiday from 12 July is now priced at £2511 (saving £287) or from 19 July the cost is £2553, a reduction of £291.

Enjoying an equally spectacular location, but this time in central Mallorca, is Son Genet, a former farmhouse (sleeping 10 in five bedrooms, two ensuite) bordered by citrus groves with impressive views of the Tramuntana mountains on one side and to the north coast on the other.  Everything about the property oozes quality and its eye-catching interior remains in keeping with the property’s pastoral location and origins.

In its gardens there is a private swimming pool, an extensive decked sun terrace, an outside shower, table tennis and a dining terrace.  A gated country track leads to the hilltop village of Buger (or an easy four-minute drive) and various beaches – including the sweeping bay of Pollenca – are under 20 minutes away.

A week’s holiday from 6 July is now priced at £2859, a whopping saving of £887.

New: Beautifully restored Galician country cottage with a private pool…

A former humble country dwelling in Galicia, now imaginatively transformed into a unique holiday home, is the latest offering from Vintage Travel, specialists in villas with private pools.

Los Tendales, situated on the edge of the hamlet of Moreira and with views across rolling meadows and wooded hilltops, showcases the skill and dedication of the local owner who has utilised his talents as a carpenter to create a unique holiday home – both traditional and contemporary –  with many handcrafted details.

The cottage, which sleeps two in a double en suite bedroom, has an open-plan living area where the restored stone of the original building blends wonderfully with carved wood that is either exposed or painted in neutral tones.

From here French doors lead to tiered lawns and terraces, home to a private swimming pool, a poolside shower, a built-in barbeque and a stone table and benches under the shade of a tree.

Just three kms away, via a scenic country road, is the hamlet of O Viso and, continuing a little further and only a 15-minute drive from the house, is the coastal town of Cesantes with its sandy beach, waterfront restaurant and cafes.

As an example of price, a seven-night holiday at the end of June is priced at £750, rising to £1298 in peak season.  A week in September costs from £530.

Flights and car hire can be arranged by Vintage Travel on request.
