Learn to Cook on Crete in your own Holiday Villa

Freelance Holidays loves everything about Crete, from its fabulous weather to its delicious and healthy food!  And this year, the villa rental company is teaming up with local foodie Jenny Skandalakis, who recently returned to her birthplace to set up Cretan Cooking Classes.

Freelance Holidays’ guests on Crete will be able to spend a morning or afternoon in the kitchen of their ‘own’ villa with Jenny or one of her chefs, learning to create authentic Cretan dishes through hands-on participation.

While Freelance Holidays kitchens are always well-equipped, the chef brings everything needed for the class from ingredients to gadgets, and at the end of four hours guests sit down to enjoy the results of their labours: a five course meal with a glass of local wine!

Jenny’s food philosophy is inspired by her grandmother’s cooking using traditional ingredients from the land, natural flavourings and olive oil: a healthy Mediterranean diet.

Typical dishes covered during the class include Cretan salad with mizythra cheese, Dakos (a barley based appetizer), Tsigariasto which is a meat dish cooked in wine, Cretan mushroom risotto with graviera cheese, and Kalitsounia – Crete’s famous cheese pastry sweetened with local honey!

The cost of the class depends on the number of people taking part, for example, €103 per person for six people occupying a three-bedroom villa such as newly-featured Villa Kamara in Atsipopoulo.

This beautiful three-bedroom villa has a brand new pool and fabulous sea views. The recent renovation contrasts exposed stone and traditional furnishings with a smart kitchen – perfect for that cookery class – and shower rooms. Villa Kamara sleeps six and with all the attractions of lively Rethymnon virtually on the doorstep, this is a great property for two or three couples holidaying together (there is parking for two hire cars), or for a family. Rental starts at £119 per night for the whole villa.

Freelance Holidays’ properties on Crete range from rustic-chic village houses to striking contemporary villas.  Virtually all are offered on an any-day-arrival and any-length-of-stay basis, with rental prices quoted per night.  This unusual flexibility allows guests to mix and match with the least-popular (therefore cheapest) no-frills and charter flights to create holidays ranging from five to 15+ nights.

Late Escapes to Hot Villas on Crete

Freelance Holidays has discounted many of its villas on Crete, where summer lingers longer thanks to the island’s southerly location in the Med.

“September and October are wonderful months,” says Freelance Holidays’ director Paul Fogg. “The temperatures stay high, averaging 24C in September and 20C in October*.  The beaches are almost empty and the locals have time to chat, and to share their harvests, from grapes to cheese and honey.”

Scattered across the foothills of the White Mountains within easy reach of both the Blue Flag sandy beach at Georgioupolis and the bustling village of Vrisses are four villas with pools, all with reduced rates in September and October.

Villa Faye: This lovely house has been painstakingly renovated to offer accommodation for six in three bedrooms. Polished wood floors, exposed stone and beamed ceilings all speak of the villa’s rustic origins, with a new kitchen and two bathrooms, air-con and WiFi satisfying modern needs.  The pool, dining terrace and huge BBQ/oven make outdoor living easy. Mature gardens and rural views give the impression of being ‘away from it all’ yet the tavernas and shops of Vrisses are less than 2kms, and the beach a 10-15 minute drive.

Available to rent by the night – as are all Freelance Holidays’ properties – Villa Faye costs from £114 per night in October, and from £159 per night in September, when a seven-night rental is now reduced to £1113, saving £210.

Villa Toula: This rustic retreat sleeps four in two bedrooms and is furnished in traditional Cretan style. Despite its modest size, Villa Toula has a private pool set in the pretty gardens which include shady olive trees. A week’s rental in October is reduced to just £763.

Villa Olivia: Recently built in local stone, this two-bedroom villa is thoroughly modern, from its open-plan living space to the lovely pool which seems to float above the olive trees below. Sleeping four, a week’s rental in October is reduced to £833.

Villa Artemis: This is set on a hillside, built over three levels and offering bags of room for up to seven people in four bedrooms. A weeks’ rental in September costs £1043, with October rental just £109 per night.

In all cases, the price is for the whole villa, and excludes flights and car hire.
