Make the most of Easter/May Bank Holidays with a BIG Canal Cruise!

The late Easter followed by the May Day Bank Holiday means a fourteen or seventeen-night holiday requires as few as nine days’ annual leave AND allows travellers to discover one of Britain’s unique canal ‘Rings’.

“The Rings combine different canals and rivers to make a circular route that offers an ever-changing landscape,” explains Nigel Richards, managing director of the UK’s premier boating holidays company Waterways Holidays.

“We can arrange 17-night holidays starting Good Friday 19 April which end on 6 May and include three Bank Holidays, taking up just nine days of holiday entitlement,” says Nigel, “while 14-night hires starting Easter Saturday also make for a great Spring holiday.”

The company’s top three Canal Rings are:

Avon Ring – A Ring of two halves: not only canals but the Rivers Avon and Severn. Two weeks allows time to discover the cathedral city of Worcester, historic Tewkesbury and Shakespeare’s Stratford as well as the orchards of the Vale of Evesham. Some of the route is lock-free, though the Tardebigge Flight is an energetic 36 lock ‘staircase’. A four-berth narrowboat such as ‘Teddington’ may be hired from Wootton Wawen: 17 nights’ hire in this period is £2210, plus fuel.

Leicester Ring – A varied waterscape of narrow and wide canals and rivers including the mighty Grand Union Canal. See Richard III’s tomb in Leicester Cathedral, visit Rugby and Burton-on-Trent. Exciting canal features include Foxton Locks, aqueducts over the Dove River and Braunston Tunnel. For two families or a group of friends, the eight-berth ‘Wenlock 8’ is based at Braunston: 17 nights hire is £2966, including the first tank of diesel.

South Pennine Ring – The rugged Pennine hills offer wonderful views, former mill towns like Hebden Bridge and Todmorden contrast with the big city buzz of Manchester. This is an energetic route with lots of locks plus the world’s longest canal tunnel, the Standedge Tunnel, where boats are towed in convoy! A two-berth boat like ‘Oxford’ based at Sowerby Bridge is £2089 for 17 nights’ hire to include the first tank of fuel.

All prices/availability correct at date of issue.

Waterways Holidays to offer Dutch Canals & Rivers for first time

Better-known for boating holidays in the UK, Waterways Holidays is adding The Netherlands to its overseas programme for 2019.

The company has chosen to partner with a base in the heart of Holland, at Kerkdriel on the River Maas (also called the Meuse), which offers a wide range of cruising routes, including north to Amsterdam and south to Maastricht.

“We are delighted to offer boating holidays in The Netherlands, as well as hire in France and Portugal,” says managing director Nigel Richards. “Say ‘Holland’ and you immediately think of canals; these connect with Holland’s river network to offer outstanding cruising options, and compared to Britain’s canals, Holland’s low-lying waterways have few locks, and the characteristic ‘drawbridges’ are fun to operate.”

Waterways Holidays is offering seven-night hires on modern four- and five-star cabin cruisers in different sizes to suit couples, families and groups of friends.

The company can suggest interesting routes taking in historic towns such Gorinchem, Gouda and Willemstad, as well as exciting Amsterdam. To the south, destinations include Den Bosch (also known as Bois le Duc) and Maastricht, which may be reached on a two-week holiday.

As well as sightseeing, the extensive waterways offer inland beaches, nature reserves and wetlands to discover. Wild swimming, fishing, riverside walks and bike rides are all options during a summer holiday.

No previous boating experience is needed: all guests receive a thorough introduction to their cruiser before setting off from the Kerkdriel base, which is set on an attractive marina with good facilities, including restaurants.

All boats are beautifully-presented with smart interiors, panoramic windows, a rear terrace with table and chairs for outdoor meals, a ladder for easy swimming from the boat (and a deck shower), additional seating on the top deck, indoor and outdoor steering positions, plus warm air heating, a cleverly-designed galley kitchen and electric shower(s) and toilet(s).

All hires include a thorough induction, all fuel used during the holiday, bed linen and towels, two bicycles for holiday use and a map of the country’s waterways.

Car parking at base for those driving to Holland, WiFi, additional bicycles and a portable BBQ are all optional extras. Pets are also welcome at additional charge (ie dogs with a Pet Passport).

PRICES

A week’s hire in April of a ‘Duo’ cruiser with double bed, making it ideal for a couple (with potential for +2 children on convertible seating in the saloon), starts at £1334, saving £282 with Waterways Holidays’ January Flash Sale (which ends 27 January).

For families or friends on holiday together, a 13.5 metre ‘Sixto’ provides three cabins to sleep six people in comfort, with two shower/wcs and the potential for two additional guests on convertible seating. A week’s hire in summer peak is £3482, saving £717 if booked before 27 January.

2017 Early Booking Offer on Canal Boat Hire from Waterways Holidays

Waterways Holidays, the UK’s leading booking company for narrowboat hire, announces early booking offers saving up to 15 per cent on 2017 hire rates.

Deals are available on hundreds of narrowboats based at more than 40 start points on Britain’s unique network of navigable canals.

Discounts apply to all 2017 dates, including peak school holidays, with savings of up to £312 on a week’s family holiday. Bookings must be made by 31 December 2016.

“Canal holidays are growing in popularity,” says managing director of Waterways Holidays, Nigel Richards, “thanks to an increase in domestic holidays following Sterling’s fall against the €uro, to TV coverage that showcases the beauty of our canals to new audiences, and to a trend for ‘slow’ and authentic holidays.”

As an example of price – and the savings available – Nigel highlights a week’s hire of a 52-feet long narrowboat called Phoebe, which is based at Norbury Junction on the picturesque Shropshire Union Canal.  There are berths for up to six people, and the boat has a flush wc and shower room, heating, a well-equipped galley kitchen, good sized sitting and dining area and mod cons such as TV/DVD and Radio/CD.

A week’s rental at Easter is normally £949, but with the early booking offer is reduced to £815 – or less than £20 per person per night for a fantastic family holiday that combines self-catering accommodation, travel (at no more than four miles an hour along the canals) and free sightseeing along the way!

Hire charge includes a full tank of fuel, car parking at base during the trip, tuition and loan of buoyancy aids, bed linen and towels. Families can even bring the family dog for free.

From Phoebe’s base at Norbury, cruising options include the Four Counties Ring, a satisfying route for a week’s cruising, including plenty of locks, tunnels to navigate and a mix of both stunning scenery and interesting canal-side sights – such as the Wedgwood Visitor Centre in the Potteries – along the way.

Waterways Holidays adds new option for Canal Holidays

Britain’s leading boating holidays agency is now offering narrowboat hire from Reedley near Burnley on the Leeds & Liverpool canal, which celebrates its 200th anniversary this year.

Waterways Holidays says that Reedley is perfectly placed about half way along England’s longest single-waterway canal, which runs for 127 miles and took 46 years to build.

In 1816 it was an important trade route but now provides access to beautiful moorland and valley scenery and historic ‘cotton’ towns.

Boats based at Burnley may be hired for three, four or seven nights. A week’s rental of a brand new ‘Duck’ class boat in the August Summer Holidays just £55 per person per night based on 6 people for one week, and provides accommodation for up to six people in a modern and well-equipped boat with two full shower/wc rooms.

Hire prices includes car parking while cruising, buoyancy aids and instruction before setting off, an information pack with guidebook, average fuel usage for a week’s holiday and damage waiver. One family pet is free, with others welcome at a supplement.

Burnley’s Canal Festival, celebrating the 200th anniversary of the Leeds & Liverpool Canal is on the Bank Holiday weekend of 27-29 August.

Britain’s Inland Waterways Experience Bookings Boom says Waterways Holidays

Britain’s canals are filling up fast! Filling up with beautiful, traditional narrowboats hired by enthusiastic holidaymakers. That’s the message from the leading boating holidays agency Waterways Holidays.

“Our advance bookings for the summer are up 22% compared to this time last year, and we’ve seen year-on-year growth for three years in a row,” says managing director Nigel Richards.

“It used to be that a UK break was a second holiday to a package trip abroad, but clearly more people than ever are choosing a week on the UK rivers, Broads and canals as their main holiday, including families booking for July and August,” adds Richards.

The company believes people are turning away from stressful airports and security fears in favour of the slower pace of life on the waterways, where the top speed permitted is four miles an hour.

The company is seeing an increase in bookings from overseas too. “The weaker pound is boosting British holidays in general and our bookings from the USA, Australasia and Scandinavia are all up,” adds Richards.

“We are also seeing – albeit from a smaller base number – an increase in the number of bookings from eastern Europe and from Asia – both very much emerging markets for boating holidays.”

A peak summer week on the Grand Union canal in a 59ft boat sleeping up to 6 starts at £1575 for a fully-equipped boat with loan of buoyancy aids and initial tuition, damage waiver cover, all fuel and car parking at the base during the week.
