Save up to 40% on October Canal Boat Hire

Waterways Holidays, the one-stop advice centre and booking site for holidays on Britain’s inland waterways, has a host of offers on October hire, with reductions of up to 40 per cent.

The largest savings are on boats starting from Pershore on the River Avon, where modern four-star narrowboats with impressive names like ‘Omniscient’, ‘Ostentatious’ and ‘Ubiquitous’ are discounted for weekend and midweek breaks as well as full week hire – including half term. For example:

Hire ‘Ostentatious’ for seven nights starting 20 October and pay just £750, saving £500 on the original price! This 52-feet long narrowboat can sleep up to six, and has central heating, a clever galley kitchen, shower, wc and all mod cons for a self-catering holiday afloat. It is pet friendly too, at no extra charge. Everything is included in the hire price, even fuel, though hirers are asked for a damage waiver deposit.

Other options include three nights on ‘Quintessence’ (sleeps up to eight) starting 20 October for £591, saving £394, and a four-night break starting 16 October on ‘Omniscient’ which is now reduced to £438, saving £292.

From Pershore, the River Avon winds through beautiful Worcestershire countryside, including the orchards of the vale of Evesham and limestone villages, to Shakespeare’s Stratford, while to the south lies historic Tewkesbury’s lovely abbey.

In Cheshire, the majority of boats based at Anderton on the Trent & Mersey Canal are now reduced by 35 per cent throughout October, with savings of up to £560 on a full week. That’s on seven nights’ hire of ‘Booted Eagle’ starting 22 October, now reduced to £1040 for the whole family.

Other breaks from Anderton include four nights’ hire of ‘Tufted Duck’ starting 8 or 15 October at £552, saving £297, and three nights’ hire of ‘Reed Bunting’ on 26 October now just £422, saving £227.  Anderton is a brilliant starting point for visiting pretty Lymm and the Lion Salt Works in historic Northwich.

Other October discounts apply to boats based at Sowerby Bridge in the Pennines, and on the lovely Kennet & Avon canal in Wiltshire.

Half Term on Britain’s Canals from £507 for a Family of 6

October half-term holidays are an opportunity to try a self-catering break with a difference: a modern family-friendly narrowboat on Britain’s canals, with prices from just £507 for a Monday to Friday break for up to six people!

That’s just one of hundreds of boating holiday options available at, the one-stop shop and advice source for breaks on our inland waterways.

£507 is the hire charge for a Derwent or Medway class narrowboat for four nights starting Monday 15 October in the Heart of England (bases at Gailey and Rugby). That’s a saving of £273 on the original price.

The following week, starting Monday 22 October the same boats are £585 for a four-night break, saving £315.

These modern narrowboats have two separate cabins to sleep four in permanent berths, with convertible seating in the saloon to sleep two additional people (six in total).

Each has one full shower/wc and an additional separate wc, a sitting/dining saloon area and well-equipped kitchen. Like most narrowboats, they’re pet-friendly at no extra charge.

Hire fees include damage waiver charge, bedlinen and towels, car parking at the base while away, loan of buoyancy aids and helmsman’s waterproofs and – of course – a comprehensive hand-over with tuition so that families can set off with confidence! The only extra is fuel used during the trip: families should budget around £50 for this.

“With more than 2,000 miles of navigable canals across the UK, most people are within an hour or two’s drive of one of our start points,” says Waterways Holidays’ managing director Nigel Richards.

Autumn Canal Breaks: Deals from Waterways Holidays

Waterways Holidays, the UK’s leading boating holidays agency, has a host of short break options – many of them discounted – this autumn.

“With all the comforts of home, including central heating or multi fuel stoves (or sometimes both), modern narrowboats are well equipped for cosy out of season breaks,” says Waterways Holidays’ managing director Nigel Richards.

Current offers for autumn short breaks include:

Shropshire Union Canal, from Middlewich in Cheshire, board ‘Ash’ for a three-night weekend starting Friday 29 September and pay £788, saving £337. This spacious 65-feet narrowboat has a double cabin and two singles, with a large saloon that offers easy chairs for relaxing, as well as a dining table and chairs for meals. ‘Ash’ has a traditional wood-burning stove in a corner of the saloon, as well as full central heating.

Grand Union Canal, from Foxton in Leicestershire, set off on the ‘Artful Dodger’ on Monday 2 October for four nights, and pay £780, saving £260. The 60-feet narrowboat sleeps two to four people, with a comfortable double cabin and shower/wc at the back of the boat, and a large saloon in the bow. A modest damage waiver charge applies.

Leeds & Liverpool Canal, from Reedley in Lancashire, board ‘Marbled Wren’ on Friday 6 October for three nights, and pay just £576, saving £143. This smart narrowboat is only 47 feet long and perfect for a couple, with a double cabin aft (with TV), and a comfy sofa in the saloon. It’s pet-friendly at no extra charge and there’s even free WiFi.

“Autumn on the canals can be magical,” says Nigel, “with early morning mists rising off the water, plenty of birdlife to spot, quiet towpaths to walk along and canal-side pubs offering good beer, good food and a warm welcome.”
