World First for Wales Cottages?

Wales Cottages has signed up the newly-created Cliff Railway Apartment in Aberystwyth and believes it to be unique, not just in Wales but in the world.

“Show me another holiday home with its own funicular railway!” says Drewe Dunn, director of Wales Cottages. “The apartment is above the ticket office at the base of the cliff railway, and guests get to ride it for free throughout their stay.”

The Aberystwyth Cliff Railway is the longest electric funicular cliff railway in Britain and has been carrying tourists to the summit of Constitution Hill since 1896. Electrified since 1921, two cars glide up and down, quietly and slowly between 10am and 6pm at the height of the season.

From the summit, visitors enjoy sweeping views over Cardigan Bay, and of 26 mountain peaks from north to south. There is a licensed cafe, indoor children’s play area and, from April to October, the additional attraction of a camera obscura which brings the coast and seascape into focus.

The Victorian red-brick ticket office stands at the north end of Aberystwyth promenade, just 100 yards from the sand and shingle beach.

Cliff Railway Apartment, accessed by 12 steps to a private entrance, occupies the whole of the first floor. After a total renovation it now offers bright and modern four-star accommodation, with a double and a twin bedroom at the rear overlooking the funicular, an open-plan living/dining room at the front of the building and a well-equipped kitchen with sea views.

The apartment is dog-friendly at no extra charge, there is a private parking space and the welcome pack includes complimentary cliff railway passes for the duration of guests’ stay.

PRICE: Winter short breaks start at £287 for three nights, with a peak August 2016 week at £795.

With its mile-long promenade, dog-friendly beach (October to April), Victorian architecture, a pier, a ruined castle, an ever-changing cultural programme at the Arts Centre and exhibitions at the National Library of Wales, plus superb coastal walks, there is lots to do in Aberystwyth year-round. There is a particular buzz during the university terms, and a great choice of cafes and restaurants.
