New Zealand Gardens: new itinerary from Silver Fern Holidays

New Zealand holidays specialist Silver Fern Holidays has published a New Zealand Garden Holidays  itinerary to inspire horticultural fans to visit the country.

“Our autumn is New Zealand’s Spring, making the next couple of months a good time to visit if you want to enjoy spectacular gardens and the native bush,” says managing director John Lightwood.

The new 16-day itinerary recommends visits to private and public gardens, combined with must-see sights between Auckland on North Island and as far south as Dunedin. It includes opportunities to discover iconic flora ‘in the wild’, such as the manuka shrub in New Zealand’s native bush, and tree ferns in the temperate rainforests.

On North Island, highlights include Ayrlies Country Garden and Auckland Botanic Gardens, the themed Hamilton Gardens, a group of private gardens in New Plymouth and Otari-Wilton’s Bush Garden in Wellington.  In South Island, the route takes in privately-owned Maple Glen in Wyndham and Lanarch Castle’s fine grounds, as well as the rainforest of Fjordland and the wilderness of Westland.

Gardens of New Zealand tours are offered to both independent travellers (from £2985 per person twin share inclusive of car hire and accommodation) and to gardening clubs (from £2595 per person including coach travel and accommodation). International flights extra.

New Zealand WON’T fly the Silver Fern!

Kiwis have voted to keep the old ‘colonial’ New Zealand flag, after a national referendum that ended yesterday 24 March.

A design featuring the country’s globally-recognised silver fern emblem was rejected during an often-acrimonious campaign.

“The decision – which I must say surprises me – emphasises the strong bonds between the UK and New Zealand.  It is one reason why British travellers have always been warmly received in New Zealand and that’s obviously not about to change either,” says John Lightwood, managing director of Silver Fern Holidays, the Nottinghamshire-based tour operator that specialises in holidays to New Zealand.

Tourism New Zealand statistics show that UK holidaymakers to the destination increased by 11.6% in 2015.

Silver Fern Holidays specialises in tailor-made trips for independent travellers, and small group escorted tours.

A 27-day Complete New Zealand itinerary, which can be tailored to suit individual interests, costs from £4995 per person, based on two people travelling and sharing accommodation, including flights from the UK, car hire, inter-island ferry travel, scenic rail journeys and a mix of boutique hotels and B&Bs.

New Zealand boom puts pressure on Hotels: Book Early says Silver Fern Holidays

New Zealand’s 2015-16 summer season has broken all tourism records. International visitor numbers are up by more than 10% and, says leading New Zealand specialist Silver Fern Holidays, UK travellers thinking of going this winter (for a New Zealand summer) need to book sooner rather than later.

“We’re just back from ITB in Berlin, the world’s largest tourism fair,” says managing director John Lightwood, “and it’s clear that all markets to New Zealand are up, especially China, and Korea.

“The country’s wide open spaces have plenty of room for visitors, but there is a shortage of hotels and I expect there to be a lot of pressure on peak season rooms.”

“Most tour groups opt for large hotels, while we recommend boutique hotels and lodges, but these will also come under pressure, so if you’re planning that ‘trip of a lifetime’ you need to book early to avoid disappointment.”

Emirates’ new non-stop Dubai-Auckland service (from 1 March 2016) adds additional flight capacity that is easily-tapped into by UK travellers.  January 2017 flights to New Zealand are already open for booking, and February and March 2017 dates will open shortly.

Silver Fern Holidays specialises in tailor-made trips for independent travellers, and also offers a programme of small group tours which are unique to the company.

A 27-day Complete New Zealand independent touring holiday in January 2017, which can be tailored to suit individual interests, costs from £3495 per person based on two people travelling together, including car hire, inter-island ferry travel and scenic rail journeys around New Zealand, with accommodation at boutique hotels and B&Bs.  Flights not included: all routes and stopovers can be arranged.

New Zealand may have a new Flag next month

The referendum in which New Zealanders will be asked whether they want to keep the existing, or change to a new Silver Fern emblem, will be held between 3 and 24 March.

“Most people in the UK think New Zealand’s national symbol is already the Silver Fern,” says John Lightwood, managing director of Silver Fern Holidays, the Nottinghamshire-based tour operator that specialises in holidays to New Zealand.

“But though it features on the All Blacks’ rugby shirts, the Black Caps of the cricket team and the tail-fins of Air New Zealand’s planes, the official flag since 1902 has been a Union Jack and the stars of the Southern Cross against a blue background,” explains Lightwood.

UK travellers to New Zealand can already see the alternative flag flying alongside the official one at over 250 government sites. Designed by Kyle Lockwood, it features a silver fern against a black and blue background alongside the stars of the Southern Cross. See the official website here: https://www.govt.nz/browse/engaging-with-government/the-nz-flag-your-chance-to-decide/

“I’m not eligible to vote, but colleagues in our Hamilton office on North Island are certainly hoping for a ‘yes’ vote for the Silver Fern!” says Lightwood.

New Zealand’s Waitangi Treaty Grounds development to boost Tourism

19 January 2016

A new museum at Waitangi Treaty Grounds will boost tourism to New Zealand’s Northland, says specialist tour operator Silver Fern Holidays.

The new museum, with a VIP opening on 5 February, provides more space and greater interactivity to tell the story of Maori and British interaction in the early 19th century.

“Northland is beautiful, but too few British travellers explore it,” says Silver Fern Holidays’ managing director John Lightwood. “The new development, costing 14 million NZD, is a significant boost for the Bay of Islands.”

“Our new small group journeys include two nights in Pahia, close to the Treaty Grounds, so that guests can get a real understanding of Maori culture,” he adds.

Newly-gathered taonga/treasures displayed in the new museum include a carved head (with a striking moko/tattoo) of chief Hongi Hika, an impressive Maori portrait by Charles Goldie and the christening gown of Queen Victoria’s Maori godson.

“And our UK office is in Southwell, Nottinghamshire, which was home to the Williams family of missionaries who were among the first settlers. It was Henry Williams who translated the Treaty into Maori to give the tribes an idea of the rights they were signing away,” says Lightwood.

“Although the Treaty was biased in favour of the British Crown, Williams genuinely did his best for Maori interests throughout his 44 years in the country and we are proud to represent New Zealand in Southwell in the 21st century!”

PACKAGE

Silver Fern Holidays’ new small group journeys start at £2195 per person for a 10 day tour of North Island that includes: meet and greet at Auckland airport, travel by 16-seater mini-coach, the services of an expert driver-guide, accommodation (twin share) in hand-picked hotels, breakfast each morning and several other meals and entrance fees to places of interest – including the new museum at the Treaty Grounds. International flights are extra.
