Holiday next door to BBC2’s Autumnwatch Location in Scotland

Chris Packham, Martin Hughes-Games, Michaela Strachan and the whole Autumnwatch crew are heading for Scotland, to broadcast live from Caerlaverock Wetland Centre each night 2, 3, 4 and 5 November on BBC2.

Caerlaverock is beside the Solway Firth in Dumfries and Galloway, and viewers can expect to see thousands of over-wintering Barnacle Geese, Whooper Swans and Mergansers, murmurations of starlings, plus live coverage of badgers, otters and other wildlife around the 1.400 acre reserve.

Wildlife lovers can holiday literally next door to the reserve at Caerlaverock Cottages, where Hollins Cottage (ref 2951) sleeps four in two bedrooms, and Blossom Cottage (ref 27754) sleeps eight in four bedrooms.

Both cottages offer four-star accommodation with bright, open-plan living spaces, wooden floors and wood-burning stoves. They’re only a quarter of a mile walk from the reserve’s Visitor Centre, and a mile from the beach.

Booked through Scottish Cottages, three-night winter weekends start at £232 for Hollins Cottage or £332 for Blossom Cottage, with a week’s rental starting at £303 and £430 respectively.

Apart from a wealth of wildlife, the cottages are well-placed for coastal walks, golf, sailing, and sightseeing, being close to medieval, moated Caerlaverock Castle and within 10 miles of Dumfries town.

Isle of Skye: dramatic setting for new Macbeth film

The Isle of Skye is the principle location for the new Macbeth movie – a blockbuster that critics are already acclaiming – starring Michael Fassbinder and Marion Cotillard (nationwide opening 2 October 2015).

Ruggedly-beautiful scenery including the Trotternish Ridge, the Old Man of Storr, the Cuillin Hills and Glen Brittle Forest were backdrops for dramatic scenes and heart-pounding battles which involved many of the locals as extras.

Head to the Isle of Skye this autumn and choose one of Scottish Cottages’ 123 hand-picked properties across the island, including:

Tigh Cleat – This crofter’s cottage nestles beneath the Trotternish Ridge – one of the film’s key locations in the north of the island – and is the perfect base for a week of hiking. Beautifully renovated, the white-washed and slate-roofed exterior hides a cheerful, contemporary interior. The good-sized living/dining room features a multi-fuel stove on a red-tiled hearth, a second sitting room has another TV, and there is a double and a twin bedroom so it sleeps four – plus one or two dogs at no extra charge. A week’s rental this autumn is from £360.

The Sheiling – Set in seven acres leading down to its own private beach on the west side of Loch Dunvegan, this simple but stylish pine lodge is an idyllic spot. The vaulted open-plan living/dining/kitchen space – with log-burning stove in one corner – has big windows looking out across the sea-loch to the slopes of Beinn Bhreac. The cosy ground-floor bedroom has a double bed. This is a great base for cycling and walking on the west coast, or cuddling up in front of the fire to enjoy the view. A week’s rental this autumn is from £320.

Finkle Cottage – This offers the best of both worlds: the character of stone walls, slate floors and a thatched roof combined with the comforts of under-floor heating, a big wood-burner and modern facilities. Rebuilt from a former croft, this secluded bolt-hole for two is a few miles from the port of Uig, with Highland cattle grazing in the fields beyond the picket fence, and the sea just a quarter of a mile away. A week’s rental this autumn is from £430.
