English Tourism Week 14-22 March

Beautiful holiday cottages recently signed by the regional cottage specialists

within the Wyndham Vacation Rentals Group

In postcard-pretty Staithes, Yorkshire Cottages is now offering a quintessential fisherman’s cottage on the harbour-side with uninterrupted views of the bay and out to sea. Rockpool Cottage is a perfect bolt-hole for one or two couples, with two beautiful double bedrooms and a large living/dining room with a stylish mix of painted furniture and coastal chic. A rare bonus in Staithes is vehicle access and parking for two cars at the cottage itself, rather than in the public car park at the ‘top’ of the village. The quaint tea rooms, coastal galleries and good village pubs are within a five minute walk over the bridge and round the harbour. A week’s rental for four ranges from £410 to £741.

A luxurious lodge, just 50 yards from the shore of Lake Windermere, is one of the latest signings for the Lake District’s premier holiday cottage agency, Cumbrian Cottages. Ambleside 64 sits within the White Cross Bay resort, so guests have access to the indoor heated pool, children’s play area, pub, restaurant and shop, as well as the jetty and marina on the lakeshore. The lodge’s exterior may be timber, but there’s nothing rustic about the contemporary indoor space with open-plan living area and two bedrooms (the master double ensuite). There’s WiFi, Freeview and Sky packages for the TV, while outside there’s a furnished deck with gas BBQ. A week’s rental for a family of four ranges from £338 to £622.

The latest eco-friendly developments at Tarset Tor glamping site on the fringe of Kielder Forest are two Bothy holiday homes. Cedar construction, recycled paper insulation, wood-pellet boilers and solar energy all reduce the environmental impact: there’s even an electric vehicle charging point. The open-plan living space includes a wood-burning stove and French doors open onto the deck. Upstairs are two shower rooms and two bedrooms, each furnished with a ‘triple’ bunk consisting of a double bed with a single above, plus a standard bunk, making this a fantastic holiday home for two families. Modern life is catered for with Smart TV, iPod dock and WiFi. In the woods are a fire pit and barbecue, a bird hide and private ‘bar’ area. A week’s Bothy rental for up to 10 ranges from £912 to £960.

Easter in Robson Green’s Northumberland: save up to £315

As Robson Green’s second ITV series of ‘More Tales from Northumberland’ gets into its stride, regional specialist Northumbrian Cottages is highlighting Easter holiday cottage deals with significant savings.

The Old Mill just outside Craster, which was once a religious retreat, is now a rambling five-bedroom holiday home ideal for two families to enjoy. Sleeping 10-14 people, and with up to three dogs welcome at no extra charge, the first week of the Easter holidays starting Friday 27 March is now £1358, saving a massive £315 on the original price of £1673.

The Old Mill is superbly located for visiting Holy Island, Bamburgh and Alnwick Castles, or for buying the famous kippers direct from the smokehouse just two miles away.

In the coastal village of Beadnell, pretty Craster Cottage has been renovated to create a modern holiday home for six, with a double ensuite and twin upstairs plus family bathroom, while a further double bedroom and separate wc are downstairs, along with the kitchen and living/dining room. Easter week here is now £885, saving £154 on the original price of £731.

Beadnell’s beach is only 300 metres away, and village facilities include a pub, cafe and shop. Boat trips to the wildlife haven of the Farne islands operate from nearby Seahouses just two miles up the coast.

Northumbrian Cottages features over 350 holiday cottages, of all sizes, across the county.

The first ‘Tales from Northumberland’ series was watched by up to 4 million viewers. The second series of eight programmes run until 6 April.

The Hide is perfect for Birdwatchers says Northumbrian Cottages

Northumbrian Cottages is highlighting one of their newest holiday homes – The Hide – whose owners have created an eco-friendly retreat in the grounds of their own home; the whole surrounded by fields and woods 15 minutes from Morpeth.

The enclosed garden is planted and maintained to attract birdlife, much of it coaxed out of the pinewoods that lie to either side, while the raised position of The Hide offers far-reaching views over farmland.

Accommodation is all on the first floor of this oak-framed building; the lower floor providing an open-sided garage and store for bikes (bring your own) along with a table-tennis table.

Heating is electric, courtesy of solar panels on the roof, but The Hide also has a regular supply for light and cooking, and – if guests require it – for recharging the car if they arrive in an electric or hybrid vehicle.

Reached by external stairs from ground level, The Hide has an open plan living space (TV/DVD, iPod dock and radio all provided), with kitchen and dining areas. The bedroom has a king sized bed and those countryside views, plus a walk-in shower in the ensuite.

As well as bird-watching and cycling, the area offers golf and a spa half a mile away at the local hotel, while Alnwick, with its castle and market, is only 10 minutes’ drive away.

A three-night break at The Hide (ref 318019) starts at just £233 rising to £475 for a peak summer week.
