Sicilian Summer Houses

Freelance Holidays has snapped up three more stylish holiday homes on Sicily, and recommends the island as a superb destination that still has availability this summer.

“Sicily is a wonderful holiday island with sandy beaches, rocky coasts, a live volcano to discover, spectacular ancient ruins, beautiful towns and superb food,” says Freelance Holidays’ managing director Paul Fogg. “There’s still peak season availability and good flight options.”

The three new ‘just signed’ properties are in the south-eastern resort of Fontaine Blanche only 14kms from the ancient city of Syracuse and about 90 minutes’ drive from Mount Etna.

Set just above the water, Villa Marisol has wonderful views of the Ionian Sea from its sun terrace, covered loggia, from the lower lawn and the Jacuzzi pool. Pack a pair of jelly sandals and you can swim from the rocks below the house, though a sandy beach is only 1km along the coast. A double bedroom, a single room and a sofa bed in the living area means the house can sleep four, but it is also a truly cool pad for a couple.

The all-white interior is effortlessly stylish, with touches of blue in the artwork and soft furnishings. There’s WiFi, air-con, an outdoor BBQ and sink, plus labour saving gadgets in the immaculate kitchen.  July dates are reduced, so that a week’s rental is £2408 in total, while peak August weeks are £3346.

The same owner has applied the same standards to the renovation of nearby Casa Blu, which sleeps six on the seafront . There’s no pool, but the water laps a few yards below the villa’s sun terraces.  Villa Bussola is equally stunning, sitting 80 metres back from the sea in the same resort.

Another recent signing with summer availability is Casa Tecla – a former fisherman’s cottage given a clever make-over to create a stylish retreat. It is in Santa Tecla, a small fishing village with just a bar and a couple of restaurants.  Casa Tecla has a small plunge pool on the terrace and a walled garden with a sea view. Open the garden gate and step onto the rocks to launch for a morning swim!

Inside, two bedrooms sit under the eaves (one double, one twin). There are two smart shower rooms and a well-equipped kitchen while the open-plan living space has a barrel-like vaulted ceiling and cool tiled floor.  Catania is about 15kms away, so this is a great base for sightseeing, including Mount Etna’s volcanic park.

Both July and August dates at Casa Tecla are reduced by Freelance Holidays, so that a week in July costs from £1743 (saving £252) and a peak August week is £2142 (saving £252).

In all cases, price is for the whole villa, and excludes flights and car hire.

Freelance Holidays Boosts Mallorca Villa Line-up

Freelance Holidays, the Mediterranean islands specialist, has boosted capacity on Mallorca by signing five additional villas, bringing its choice of properties on the island to 68.

“Mallorca is more in demand than ever,” says managing director Paul Fogg, “and we are glad to have signed up both newly-completed and newly-available villas for late-booking guests.”

Newly-transformed to create a modern holiday home is Ca’n Teulala, a two-bedroom villa set on a large rural plot only two kms from Pollenca’s cafes and restaurants, with sandy beaches at Puerto Pollenca and Cala San Vicenc about 10 minutes’ drive.

Two trees, including an ancient olive, shade the house in what is otherwise a ‘new’ garden, surrounding the beautiful pool, sun terrace, BBQ terrace and villa itself.

It has a double bedroom, bathroom and open-plan living space at ground floor level and the twin bedroom on the first floor gallery. WiFi and a high-spec kitchen complete the facilities. A week in June for four people is £1022, rising to £1813 for seven nights in peak season.

Other properties adding much-needed capacity are Ca’n Guineau, within walking distance of Pollenca’s eateries and shops (sleeps up to six: a week in June from £1764) plus Villas S’Hort d’Misser, Son Bleu and Sa Clos.

And with a newly-built eight metre swimming pool with integral 50cm deep children’s pool, Villa Paxaco on the Bay of Pollenca also has good availability, with a week in June for six people reduced to £1043.

Flights and car hire not included. Freelance Holidays’ policy of any-day-arrival and any-length-of-stay allows travellers to mix and match low-cost flights for flexible and great value holidays.

50% off Newly Built Villas in Kefalonia

Freelance Holidays has slashed the price of two brand new villas on the Liakas peninsula of Kefalonia by 50%.

Why?  Because they’re so new that no photos are available, which has held back early season bookings.

“Both villas are completed, both are being furnished now, and because they are under the same ownership as Villa Anna Maria in the same location, we know they will be equally fabulous,” says managing director Paul Fogg.

“But although we are illustrating the new villas with photographs of Villa Anna Maria, to give a sense of what they are like, we understand why holidaymakers have been reluctant to commit, so we are reducing the ‘per night’ charge in May from £199 to £99,” explains Paul.

That is £16.50 per person per night to be the first guests in a luxury villa with private pool and sea views. Both Villa Penelope and Villa Odysseus have three bedrooms to sleep up to six people, with three bath/shower rooms.

The setting of both villas, five minutes away from the village of Spartia, is spectacular and both have footpath access to a large rock platform where guests will find sun-beds and parasols: an almost-private spot from which to swim in the crystal clear Ionian sea.

Flights and car hire not included. Freelance Holidays’ policy of any-day-arrival and any-length-of-stay allows travellers to mix and match low-cost flights for flexible and great value holidays.

Village Villas for Easter Celebrations: save up to £350

Freelance Holidays is highlighting its ‘village villas’ on Crete – with savings – available in April, when British and Greek dates for Easter co-incide.

“Rural Crete celebrates Easter in style,” says managing director Paul Fogg, “and when your villa is just a stroll from the village square it’s easy to join in, from Good Friday processions to Easter Day fireworks and spit-roasted lamb feasts: the locals welcome everyone!”

The sleepy village of Samonas is set on a shoulder of the White Mountains, just 12kms from the sea. The village taverna and an ancient Byzantine church are only a couple of minutes’ walk away from Villa Vigla, while five kms down the valley is the larger village of Stylos. The imaginatively converted 200-year old house sleeps four in two bedrooms, has a pretty courtyard, freeform pool and shady garden. Easter holiday hire is just £99 per night saving £30 per night, or £210 on a seven-night stay.

In contrast to Samonas, the village of Gavalochori boasts two cafenions, two tavernas, a bakery, mini-market and a handicraft co-operative, as well as a church, making Villa Metapothia a great holiday home for friends or a large family. The six-bedroom house with fantastic views to the sea is little more than 300 metres from the village and was built by Freelance Holidays’ operations director Diane and her husband Yiannis, so it combines both Cretan style with superb facilities.  Easter dates are now reduced to £199 per night (saving £50 per night or £350 on a week’s stay for up to twelve people).

Other discounted village villas include Villa Galania at Armeni (£119 per night over Easter) and Villa Faye at Vrisses (£114 per night at Easter).

In all cases, quoted prices are to rent the entire villa. Flights and car hire not included. Freelance Holidays’ policy of any-day-arrival and any-length-of-stay allows travellers to mix and match low-cost flights for flexible and great value holidays.

Old Finca with New Pool leads Freelance Holidays’ Mallorca programme

An old finca with a brand new pool is one of Freelance Holidays’ expanded Mallorca rental programme, which now offers more than 60 villas with pools and hand-picked apartments.

Ca’n Guineau’s rustic origins are clear, from its terracotta tiles to the beamed ceilings, yet now it finds itself perched on the edge of pretty Pollensa Town, with its bars and restaurants just a few minutes stroll from the front door.

New for 2017 – which is why it has been signed up by Freelance Holidays – is the transformation of the rear courtyard to accommodate a six metre by three metre pool, outdoor shower, furnished sun terrace and outdoor kitchen with sink, fridge and BBQ.

A dining terrace runs across the back of the finca and inside are a dining room, living room, kitchen and three double/twin bedrooms (so it sleeps six) and two contemporary bathrooms.

Complimentary WiFi, air-conditioning and covered parking in the entrance courtyard complete the property, which combines the atmosphere of a farmhouse with the location of a townhouse.

The nearest bar is just 500 metres away and the town’s narrow cobbled streets are a warren of art galleries, craft shops, restaurants and churches. The wooded hills around Ca’n Guineau offer superb walking, and the beach is five minutes’ drive away.

Available – as are all Freelance Holidays’ properties – to rent by the night for ‘tailor made’ holidays, April prices start at £110 per night (or £770 for a week) rising to £307 per night in August peak (or £2149 for a week). Excludes flights and car hire (though once at the villa, which is approx 60kms from Palma airport, a car is not strictly necessary).
