Chic Sicily: New for 2018 from Freelance Holidays

Among several newly-featured Sicily properties added by Freelance Holidays are a chic apartment in baroque Catania, bright beachside villas and a modernist cowshed.

Villa Hybla is the modernist cowshed: a recently-built single storey villa imitating an agricultural building with its plain exterior and a terracotta tiled roof. Surrounded by fields, with no neighbours, this is a sophisticated and private retreat 20 minutes from the coast at Punta Secca (where TV’s Inspector Montalbano is filmed) and the same distance from the baroque town of Ragusa.

Three ensuite bedrooms (two doubles, one zip’n’link twin) make Villa Hybla perfect for friends or family holidays.  Strong lines define the villa’s style from the 14 by five metre pool (salt filtered, rather than chlorinated) to the dining terrace and architectural planting in the gardens. The only curves at Villa Hybla are the beautiful barrel ceilings.

A week’s rental of this fabulous property starts at £1428, rising to £2716 in August.  It is a superb base for sightseeing in southern Sicily, from the cave dwellings of Ispica to the beautiful Vendicari Nature Reserve and the baroque towns of Ragusa, Noto and Syracuse.

The historic city of Catania makes for a rewarding break at any time of year and Penthouse Duomo takes its name from the cathedral which dominates the view from its large terraces, which overlook the ‘elephant’ fountain in the Piazza del Duomo below, while – only 40kms to the north – Mount Etna can also be admired.

The apartment is laid out over the third and fourth floors (there’s a lift) of an old building and provides truly luxurious accommodation, with elegant living spaces and two double bedrooms. Available to rent for short breaks or longer stays, prices start at £357 per night.

Set next door to each other in the quiet resort of San Lorenzo are Villa Timo and Villa Rosmarino where new plunge pools added this winter will complete the owner’s stylish makeover of these beachside pads.  Bright pops of colour and thoughtful accessories such as  mirrors and bedside lamps make these comfortable, as well as stylish homes. The fabulous sandy beach is just the other side of the low wall that bounds the properties. Each offers two double bedrooms to sleep two couples, and each costs from £1715 to rent for a week, rising to £3997 in high season.

In all cases, the price is for the property, and excludes flights and car hire.

New Crete Villas for 2018 from Freelance Holidays

Villa specialist Freelance Holidays has expanded its choice of holiday homes on Crete to more than 60 for 2018, adding characterful villas with private pools in Stylos, Rethymnon and Plaka.

Newly-contracted in Stylos following a total renovation, Villa Vangelis offers outstanding value for a couple, with an additional twin to sleep four if wished.  Stone-built, it balances rugged character with modern facilities in a standalone spot with far-reaching views over olive groves and the village two kilometres below. Here, mini-markets and tavernas may be found, while a good beach is just a 10 minute drive.  There is plenty of space indoors and out and a week’s rental starts at just £693, making this two-bedroom property more than good value even for a couple!

The company’s first property in Rethymnon is Villa Kamara, added to the programme following installation of a pool. It has glass walls on two sides allowing wonderful sea views. The renovation contrasts exposed stone and traditional furnishings with smart kitchen and shower rooms.

Three bedrooms sleep up to six and with the facilities of Rethymnon on the doorstep, this is a great property for two or three couples holidaying together (there is room to park two hire cars). Seven nights in low season starts at just £833.

Villa Argiro is a great family property with private pool, bags of space and a fantastic location: Plaka’s sleepy village square is little more than 100 yards away and there are two mini-markets. Tucked behind stone walls, Villa Argiro sits on a large plot, with a courtyard BBQ, second dining terrace, two lawns and a first-floor sun terrace with sea and mountain views. Living spaces are equally generous and there are three double/twin bedrooms. A week’s rental costs from only £833.

Freelance Holidays allows any-day-arrival at virtually all properties, even in peak season, making it easy to mix and match low-cost flights to create holidays of varying durations, from five nights to 17… any length of stay! In all cases, the price quoted is for the whole villa, and excludes flights and car hire.

Book Now or Miss Out: Med Villas for 2018

Villa specialist Freelance Holidays has made 90% of its properties ready to book for 2018, citing a bumper 2017 season and highlighting properties that, says managing director Paul Fogg, “will sell out early thanks not only to their size and style but to their location.”

Freelance Holidays is unusual among villa companies in allowing any day arrival at virtually all properties, even in peak season, making it easy for customers to mix and match with low-cost flights to create great value holidays of varying durations, from five nights to 9, 13, 17 … any length of stay!

Paul’s top tips to book early for 2018 include:
On KEFALONIA, Villa Penelope, Villa Odysseus and Villa Anna Maria. They sit together – but orientated away from each other – on a finger of the Liakas peninsula, with footpath access down to a natural level platform for a dip in the Ionian Sea. Each also has – of course – a private pool, and spectacular sea views.  Anna Maria was completed in 2016; but Penelope and Odysseus welcomed their first guests only in May, so that photographs of the finished villas were not available until late on in the booking season.

“Now the pictures do these luxurious properties justice, peak season dates will be snapped up by Christmas,” forecasts Paul. “All three villas sleep up to six in three ensuite bedrooms, making them perfect for families with older children.”

2018 prices (the same for each villa) start at £229 per night, rising to £759 per night in peak season.

On CRETE’S north-west coast, Villa Argiro is also tipped to book early. This tastefully restored village house is comfortable rather than luxurious, but the location ticks all the boxes. Not only is it in the heart of a real community, but it is less than 1km from the pretty resort of Almerida, where two gently-shelving sandy beaches fly a Blue Flag.

“The village square, with a choice of tavernas and a minimarket, are a couple of minutes’ stroll away and Almerida’s superb beaches are little more than 850 metres down the hill,” says Paul.  “Argiro offers outstanding value for families, with a peak week only £2359 for six people, and off-season rental from only £118 per night!”

A recently-added 8m x 5m private pool is the reason Villa Paxaco on MALLORCA will be hugely popular in 2018. With Roman steps for easy access, and a shallow corner section for young children, the property is also all on one level, making it a great family villa. The location – not more than six kilometres from both Pollença Bay and Alcudia’s old town – is also excellent.  2018 rates start at £125 for the whole villa, which sleeps six, rising to £285 in peak season.

In all cases, the price is for the whole villa, and excludes flights and car hire.

Late Escapes to Hot Villas on Crete

Freelance Holidays has discounted many of its villas on Crete, where summer lingers longer thanks to the island’s southerly location in the Med.

“September and October are wonderful months,” says Freelance Holidays’ director Paul Fogg. “The temperatures stay high, averaging 24C in September and 20C in October*.  The beaches are almost empty and the locals have time to chat, and to share their harvests, from grapes to cheese and honey.”

Scattered across the foothills of the White Mountains within easy reach of both the Blue Flag sandy beach at Georgioupolis and the bustling village of Vrisses are four villas with pools, all with reduced rates in September and October.

Villa Faye: This lovely house has been painstakingly renovated to offer accommodation for six in three bedrooms. Polished wood floors, exposed stone and beamed ceilings all speak of the villa’s rustic origins, with a new kitchen and two bathrooms, air-con and WiFi satisfying modern needs.  The pool, dining terrace and huge BBQ/oven make outdoor living easy. Mature gardens and rural views give the impression of being ‘away from it all’ yet the tavernas and shops of Vrisses are less than 2kms, and the beach a 10-15 minute drive.

Available to rent by the night – as are all Freelance Holidays’ properties – Villa Faye costs from £114 per night in October, and from £159 per night in September, when a seven-night rental is now reduced to £1113, saving £210.

Villa Toula: This rustic retreat sleeps four in two bedrooms and is furnished in traditional Cretan style. Despite its modest size, Villa Toula has a private pool set in the pretty gardens which include shady olive trees. A week’s rental in October is reduced to just £763.

Villa Olivia: Recently built in local stone, this two-bedroom villa is thoroughly modern, from its open-plan living space to the lovely pool which seems to float above the olive trees below. Sleeping four, a week’s rental in October is reduced to £833.

Villa Artemis: This is set on a hillside, built over three levels and offering bags of room for up to seven people in four bedrooms. A weeks’ rental in September costs £1043, with October rental just £109 per night.

In all cases, the price is for the whole villa, and excludes flights and car hire.
