Singles specialist Friendship Travel builds its own boutique hotel in Olhao

Friendship Travel’s Summer 2019 programme is spear-headed by a brand-new boutique hotel in the Algarve town of Olhao.

The holiday company, which specialises in sociable holidays for single travellers, is investing in the development of the 14-room property to serve its own customer base. Casa Rosa will open its doors as a Friendship Travel Houseparty venue in June 2019.

Casa Rosa is being created from the shell of a 19th century townhouse in Olhao’s old town and is specifically designed to appeal to Friendship Travel’s single guests.

When finished, it will offer 14 double-bedded rooms for sole occupancy with no single supplement to pay.

The development includes a plunge pool in the courtyard, a first-floor sun terrace with jacuzzi, and an open-plan living and dining space where meals will be eaten together around two large tables.

Casa Rosa will offer three-star standards in terms of hotel facilities, with boutique styling using local, natural materials from terracotta floor tiles to lime-washed plaster and found or re-purposed decorative features.

The hotel is set on a tree-lined avenue within 10 minutes’ easy stroll of Olhao’s market buildings (designed by Gustav Eiffel) and the embarkation point for the ferries which run to the off-shore islands of Armona, Culatra and Fuseta, famous for their white-sand beaches.

Olhao is one of the Algarve’s most authentic towns, with a working fishing port, fish and produce markets, Moorish and baroque architecture and cobbled streets. The Rio Formosa Natural Park offers many miles of environmentally-important dunes and estuaries to discover.

“I first came to Olhao in 2016 looking for a new Houseparty venue and fell in love with the town,” says Friendship Travel’s founder and managing director Colum McLornan.

“I could not find the finished item then, but I did find a building that had potential. In the meantime, we’ve been featuring a seafront five-star in Olhao and will continue to do so on a limited number of departures, but I am confident that Casa Rosa will be a huge hit, offering a fantastic combination of quality, location and value for single travellers.”

Seven and 14-night ATOL-bonded packages are offered with weekly departures between 2 June and 20 October next year.

Flights are to Faro airport, approx. 20 minutes’ transfer away, with up to 28 regional flying options from the UK and Ireland.

A week at Casa Rosa starts at £795 to include flights and transfers, breakfast every morning and dinner with wine on five nights each week, as well as the support of a Friendship Travel Host.

New-build coastal villa expands 2019 Kefalonia programme

A fabulous new-build villa, and other newly-signed properties on the Liakis peninsula will expand Freelance Holidays’ programme in Kefalonia for 2019.

The Liakis headland juts south into the Ionian Sea, and each villa is cleverly sited to provide maximum privacy and fabulous – up to 270° – sea views. A footpath winds down to a natural rock platform furnished with parasols and sunbeds, known by the locals as Amandakis Beach, where a fixed ladder provides direct access to the sea. (Families with younger children will find gently shelving sand only 5kms away by car.)

Villa Roberta is being built to the same high specification as Villa Anna Maria, Villa Odysseus and Villa Penelope, which are under the same ownership/architect and which already receive outstanding guest feedback*. The web page for Villa Roberta therefore shows images of the other villas as an indication of standard and style.

Like its sister properties, Villa Roberta will sleep up to six people in three ensuite rooms, and as well as excellent cooking/dining and relaxing areas inside, it will offer fabulous outdoor living, including jaw-dropping sea views, an infinity pool, shady and sunny terraces and a BBQ kitchen.

Available for stays from 1st May 2019, Villa Roberta is already open for booking, with prices starting from just £199 per night (£1393 for seven nights), rising to £549 per night in August peak (£3843 for seven nights). Freelance Holidays offers any-day-arrival and any-length-of-stay (minimum five nights) for maximum flexibility.

This new-build villa and the signing of five more properties on Cape Liakis means that Freelance Holidays will offer 15 individual holiday homes here in 2019, plus a further 15 in other locations across the island: 30 Kefalonia villas in total. (Other destinations are Crete, Mallorca, Menorca, Sicily and Sardinia.)

“Cape Liakis has no sand, no bars and no through-road, making it one of the most peaceful spots on Kefalonia,” says Paul Fogg, managing director of Freelance Holidays, “yet guests will find tavernas, restaurants, markets and other beaches within five to ten minutes’ drive, and the airport is only 20 minutes away.”

5-night Villa Breaks for Late Summer Sun from Freelance Holidays

As families return from holiday, couples looking for child-free sunshine can combine low-cost flights for Friday-Tuesday or Thursday-Monday escapes to the Med with Freelance Holidays, which offers five-night breaks at hand-picked villas.

Freelance Holidays can recommend beautiful houses and apartments, usually with private pools, for the freedom of self-catering with easy access to restaurants, shops and airports.

For instance, on Mallorca, Ca’n Teulula is a rural retreat only a two-kilometre stroll from the cobbled streets of Pollenca Town for restaurants and bars, and an hour’s drive from Palma airport. Beaches at Puerto Pollenca and Cala San Vicente are about 10 minutes’ drive. Renovated in a style that is both rustic and contemporary, the downstairs double bedroom with walk-in shower room makes this perfect for a couple, though there is also a galleried twin bedroom. In September, Ca’n Teulala is offered at £209 per night, or £1045 for a five-night escape, dropping to £135 per night, or just £675 for five nights in October.

On Crete, where warm air and sea temperatures linger until the end of October, Maro’s Spitaki is a one-bedroom village house with private pool that is only 15 minutes’ drive from Chania’s Venetian harbour and half an hour from the airport. The village may only offer a cafenion and simple bakery for breakfast rolls, but there’s a good choice of tavernas within five to eight kilometres. October rental is just £105 per night, or £525 for a five-night break.

Sicily is another short break option, with Easyjet flights to Catania dovetailing with Thursday to Tuesday rental of Zia Emma’s Apartment in the baroque town of Noto, only an hour’s drive from the airport. This elegant apartment with a double bedroom is in a historic house in the heart of the city and offers a romantic retreat for those looking for good food and architectural beauty. October rental is just £122 per night, making a five-night escape £610.

Car hire may be arranged in all locations.

New properties on Crete signed by Freelance Holidays

In what is proving to be a bumper year for Mediterranean island villas, two newly-built holiday homes on Crete’s unspoiled south coast have been signed by Freelance Holidays, offering both availability and great value for August and late summer holidays.

Vaso’s House is a spacious first-floor apartment a couple of minutes’ walk from the facilities of Kerames village. It offers two bedrooms to sleep four. There’s no pool, but the beach is just 4.5kms drive, and all rooms have access to the sea-facing balcony for wonderful views.

The traditional village square offers a taverna and café, and the maze of streets include a well-stocked minimarket. The apartment’s styling is modern rustic, and the owner, Vaso, has insisted on the same quality finish as her parents enjoy in their apartment below. Ready for guests from 1 August, when a week’s rental costs £1050, the apartment is available to rent on a per night basis from just £108 in September when a week is only £756.

A few miles along the coast, Alexandro’s House is a newly-renovated ‘cottage’ standing alone on the edge of Agia Paraskevi. Three new bedrooms (with two shower rooms) sleep up to six, and all guests are welcome to use the pools at the two village tavernas which are within three minutes’ walk. Sea views are a feature of this traditionally-built stone house with a modern interior.

Available now, the newly-renovated Alexandro’s House costs £1085 for a week in August, with nights in September £138, making a week at the end of the summer only £966 for six!

Both properties are around two hours’ drive from either Chania or Heraklion airport: car hire is essential but is not included in the price.

From £999 for a family of six: Crete in August with Freelance Holidays

Freelance Holidays now features seven family-run apartment ‘complexes’ on Crete that deliver all the enjoyment of a villa holiday at half the price this summer, with a week in August starting at just £999 for a three-bedroom apartment sleeping six (excluding flights and car hire).

“Share the pool at one of our small and friendly apartments and the cost plummets,” says Freelance Holidays’ managing director Paul Fogg. “A three-bedroom villa with a private pool is typically twice the price.

“And apartments can deliver other benefits: children for yours to play with; often a location that’s closer to the sea, and nearer facilities such as tavernas and markets. You may also be able to get away without a car, which keeps costs down even more.”

For example the Rouladina Apartments in Stalos have been a Freelance Holidays exclusive for several years. They’re owned by Manolis and Dimitra, Greek-Canadians who built half a dozen apartments around a 10m x 5m pool set just 500 metres from the sandy beach. The couple live on site and manage the apartments with a combination of Canadian efficiency and Greek hospitality: guests are often welcomed with one of Dimitra’s traditional bakes.

A week in August in Apartment Four, one of the four three-bedroom apartments (there is also a two-bedroom and one-bedroom unit) costs from just £999. It sleeps six, with the option to add a seventh on the sofa-bed in the living area. Like all their apartments in this low-rise (two storey) there’s a sea view to the front, and sun-baked vineyards behind. The nearest taverna and tiny shop is 100m away, with a wider choice 500m along the coast road. The bus stop is nearby, and as Chania airport is only 27kms away, and the town itself within 10kms, car hire is not essential – another saving!

Freelance Holidays’ line-up of apartments on Crete include the seafront Pavlakis Beach apartments, also in Stalos, Iliopetra Studios in Douliana and Paleohora Harbour Apartments on the south-west coast.
