From £999 for a family of six: Crete in August with Freelance Holidays

Freelance Holidays now features seven family-run apartment ‘complexes’ on Crete that deliver all the enjoyment of a villa holiday at half the price this summer, with a week in August starting at just £999 for a three-bedroom apartment sleeping six (excluding flights and car hire).

“Share the pool at one of our small and friendly apartments and the cost plummets,” says Freelance Holidays’ managing director Paul Fogg. “A three-bedroom villa with a private pool is typically twice the price.

“And apartments can deliver other benefits: children for yours to play with; often a location that’s closer to the sea, and nearer facilities such as tavernas and markets. You may also be able to get away without a car, which keeps costs down even more.”

For example the Rouladina Apartments in Stalos have been a Freelance Holidays exclusive for several years. They’re owned by Manolis and Dimitra, Greek-Canadians who built half a dozen apartments around a 10m x 5m pool set just 500 metres from the sandy beach. The couple live on site and manage the apartments with a combination of Canadian efficiency and Greek hospitality: guests are often welcomed with one of Dimitra’s traditional bakes.

A week in August in Apartment Four, one of the four three-bedroom apartments (there is also a two-bedroom and one-bedroom unit) costs from just £999. It sleeps six, with the option to add a seventh on the sofa-bed in the living area. Like all their apartments in this low-rise (two storey) there’s a sea view to the front, and sun-baked vineyards behind. The nearest taverna and tiny shop is 100m away, with a wider choice 500m along the coast road. The bus stop is nearby, and as Chania airport is only 27kms away, and the town itself within 10kms, car hire is not essential – another saving!

Freelance Holidays’ line-up of apartments on Crete include the seafront Pavlakis Beach apartments, also in Stalos, Iliopetra Studios in Douliana and Paleohora Harbour Apartments on the south-west coast.

Kefalonia: save up to £350 on gorgeous villas in June

June on Kefalonia means sunny days up to 26 degrees*, un-crowded beaches and direct flights from eleven UK airports – and with Freelance Holidays policy of ‘any day arrival, any length of stay’ this is a great opportunity to mix and match cheap flights with flexible villa rental to create a bargain holiday!

For example, Villa Penelope on the Liakas peninsula is reduced from £349 per night to £299 per night, saving £50 per night or £350 on a seven-night hire from 14 June.

This villa sleeps six (three bedrooms, three shower rooms) and while the interior is as smart and modern as anyone could wish, it is the outdoor living space that packs the biggest punch: virtually 270-degree sea views, with a large private pool surrounded by a furnished sun terrace; a shady pergola on the edge of the bluff, a covered terrace with sofa set and swing seat; a BBQ dining terrace, and a rear balcony with cushioned seating offering a book-lover’s retreat from the sun.

The icing on the cake is a footpath from the villa down to a level rock platform beside the Ionian Sea, from which it’s possible to bathe; a more conventional sandy beach is no more than five minutes’ drive away.

An hour along the coast Villa Seagull also enjoys a sea-facing spot, and is reduced to £199 per night (for six people), saving £40 per night or £280 on any seven nights between 2 and 20 June. Its proximity to the laid-back family resort of Skala (just over a kilometre away) makes this the perfect villa for those who like to eat out as much as they may enjoy self-catering in the modern kitchen, or barbecuing on the dining terrace.

Other discounted villas include Poseidon (sleeping six) and Yianna (sleeping four), both with savings of £140 off seven nights’ rental throughout June.

This is a fantastic time to holiday on Kefalonia: fewer families mean more space on fabulous beaches like Myrtos, Skala and Xi. The sights are less busy too: visit Melissani Cave where the sun breaks through the roof to light up a turquoise lake, or watch loggerhead turtles gather around the fishing boats, looking for fishy scraps in Argostoli harbour.

Learn to Cook on Crete in your own Holiday Villa

Freelance Holidays loves everything about Crete, from its fabulous weather to its delicious and healthy food!  And this year, the villa rental company is teaming up with local foodie Jenny Skandalakis, who recently returned to her birthplace to set up Cretan Cooking Classes.

Freelance Holidays’ guests on Crete will be able to spend a morning or afternoon in the kitchen of their ‘own’ villa with Jenny or one of her chefs, learning to create authentic Cretan dishes through hands-on participation.

While Freelance Holidays kitchens are always well-equipped, the chef brings everything needed for the class from ingredients to gadgets, and at the end of four hours guests sit down to enjoy the results of their labours: a five course meal with a glass of local wine!

Jenny’s food philosophy is inspired by her grandmother’s cooking using traditional ingredients from the land, natural flavourings and olive oil: a healthy Mediterranean diet.

Typical dishes covered during the class include Cretan salad with mizythra cheese, Dakos (a barley based appetizer), Tsigariasto which is a meat dish cooked in wine, Cretan mushroom risotto with graviera cheese, and Kalitsounia – Crete’s famous cheese pastry sweetened with local honey!

The cost of the class depends on the number of people taking part, for example, €103 per person for six people occupying a three-bedroom villa such as newly-featured Villa Kamara in Atsipopoulo.

This beautiful three-bedroom villa has a brand new pool and fabulous sea views. The recent renovation contrasts exposed stone and traditional furnishings with a smart kitchen – perfect for that cookery class – and shower rooms. Villa Kamara sleeps six and with all the attractions of lively Rethymnon virtually on the doorstep, this is a great property for two or three couples holidaying together (there is parking for two hire cars), or for a family. Rental starts at £119 per night for the whole villa.

Freelance Holidays’ properties on Crete range from rustic-chic village houses to striking contemporary villas.  Virtually all are offered on an any-day-arrival and any-length-of-stay basis, with rental prices quoted per night.  This unusual flexibility allows guests to mix and match with the least-popular (therefore cheapest) no-frills and charter flights to create holidays ranging from five to 15+ nights.

With temperatures upwards of 20C, over a dozen low-cost flights to choose from every week, and Greek Easter to celebrate on 8 April, Crete promises sunny days and silly prices for April breaks!

Villa specialist Freelance Holidays has discounted rental at selected properties to as little as £79 per night for six people – saving £30 a night – that’s £210 on a week’s stay.

And with its any-day-arrival-any-length of stay approach Freelance Holidays is the perfect partner for booking stays as short as five nights (or as long as you like) to mix and match with travellers’ own flights for bargain April holidays.

For example, in Rethymnon, newly-featured Villa Kamara is reduced to £89 per night – saving £30 per night – throughout April for the whole property: a beautiful three-bedroom villa brand new pool and fabulous sea views. The recent renovation contrasts exposed stone and traditional furnishings with smart kitchen and shower rooms.

Villa Kamara sleeps six and with all the facilities – and traditional Easter celebrations – of Rethymnon on the doorstep, this is a great property for a family or two or three couples holidaying together (there is parking for two hire cars).

Other April discounts include Villa Olivia, a two-bedroom house sleeping four – with private pool – set in peaceful countryside outside the village of Vrisses and only 10 minutes’ drive from the beach at Georgoupolis. This fabulous property is set on one level and is perfect for a young family or two couples. All April rentals are now reduced to £79 per night for the whole property, saving £210 on a week’s stay.

And for couples, the small but perfectly-formed Maro’s Spitaki offers one double bedroom and – a rare thing in a couple’s property – a large private pool. No more than 15 minutes by car from the Venetian port at Chania, set among citrus groves, this idyllic retreat is £105 per night throughout April.

Chic Sicily: New for 2018 from Freelance Holidays

Among several newly-featured Sicily properties added by Freelance Holidays are a chic apartment in baroque Catania, bright beachside villas and a modernist cowshed.

Villa Hybla is the modernist cowshed: a recently-built single storey villa imitating an agricultural building with its plain exterior and a terracotta tiled roof. Surrounded by fields, with no neighbours, this is a sophisticated and private retreat 20 minutes from the coast at Punta Secca (where TV’s Inspector Montalbano is filmed) and the same distance from the baroque town of Ragusa.

Three ensuite bedrooms (two doubles, one zip’n’link twin) make Villa Hybla perfect for friends or family holidays.  Strong lines define the villa’s style from the 14 by five metre pool (salt filtered, rather than chlorinated) to the dining terrace and architectural planting in the gardens. The only curves at Villa Hybla are the beautiful barrel ceilings.

A week’s rental of this fabulous property starts at £1428, rising to £2716 in August.  It is a superb base for sightseeing in southern Sicily, from the cave dwellings of Ispica to the beautiful Vendicari Nature Reserve and the baroque towns of Ragusa, Noto and Syracuse.

The historic city of Catania makes for a rewarding break at any time of year and Penthouse Duomo takes its name from the cathedral which dominates the view from its large terraces, which overlook the ‘elephant’ fountain in the Piazza del Duomo below, while – only 40kms to the north – Mount Etna can also be admired.

The apartment is laid out over the third and fourth floors (there’s a lift) of an old building and provides truly luxurious accommodation, with elegant living spaces and two double bedrooms. Available to rent for short breaks or longer stays, prices start at £357 per night.

Set next door to each other in the quiet resort of San Lorenzo are Villa Timo and Villa Rosmarino where new plunge pools added this winter will complete the owner’s stylish makeover of these beachside pads.  Bright pops of colour and thoughtful accessories such as  mirrors and bedside lamps make these comfortable, as well as stylish homes. The fabulous sandy beach is just the other side of the low wall that bounds the properties. Each offers two double bedrooms to sleep two couples, and each costs from £1715 to rent for a week, rising to £3997 in high season.

In all cases, the price is for the property, and excludes flights and car hire.
