Puffins in Pembrokeshire…

For lovers of birdlife, and particularly brightly coloured puffins, Skomer Island – lying less than a mile off the Pembrokeshire coastline – is the place to head this June.

Each year around 6,000 of these birds return to the island to breed where they lay a single egg which hatches during the month.  At this time Skomer is full of puffins with beaks stuffed with sand eels which are eagerly awaited by their chicks.  The birds aren’t phased by visitors to the island and are quite relaxed whilst navigating to reach their burrows.  The embarkation point for boat trips to the island is Martin’s Haven (near Marloes) and the crossing takes just 10 minutes.

For those keen to experience this glorious spectacle, Coastal Cottages of Pembrokeshire is offering a wide choice of properties in June, many reduced in price.

These include Y Bwthyn, a romantic cottage for two now costing £382 (saving £77) for seven nights from 1 or 15 June.  The property is just 400 yards from the sandy cove of Cwm yr Eglwys and enjoys panoramic sea views.

In the popular seaside village of Broad Haven, a week from 8 or 15 June in Barnacle Cottage is now priced at £442, a reduction of £78.  The cottage sleeps five in three bedrooms and just a five-minute walk leads to a glorious sandy beach.

Or for larger families, seven nights from 7 and 14 June in Curlew Cottage now costs £559, saving £110.  The property sleeps nine in four bedrooms and is set in pretty countryside a short drive from lovely sandy beaches such as Newgale and Druidston.
