Fish from your front door: Waterside Holiday Cottages

Britain loves fishing! More than 1.3 million rod licences are taken out each year (source: DEFRA), which is no surprise to Waterside Breaks, who say holiday cottages beside fishing lakes are among their most popular properties.

For example, within the Cotswold Water Park region, the 12 Scandinavian-style Lake Pochard Lodges offer not only match-quality fishing within yards of the holiday homes, but a host of other activities around the park for non-angling family members, from hiking, cycling and water-sports to a man-made beach and floating assault course.

Lake Pochard Lodge anglers can choose from the Specimen Carp Lake, which is for the exclusive use of guests at £10 per person per 24-hour period. A 73-peg Match Lake is also available from 7am to dusk at £5 per person. Carp, tench, bream, roach and rudd are the main stock, with catches of 100lbs+ in a day common. A Tackle Shop within the Waterside Cafe offers both bait and tackle.

The lodges themselves have a cosy feel thanks to the timber, contrasting with contemporary furnishings, smart kitchens and bathrooms. Two and three-bedroom lodges are available and all are wheelchair friendly (as are many fishing pegs).  A three-night weekend this spring starts at £485 for up to four people.

In a sleepy corner of south Devon, five luxurious holiday lodges are set around three spring-fed lakes at South View.  Despite its quiet setting the city of Exeter is three and a half miles away, and both Dartmoor and the coast are within easy reach.

South View lodges low res

South View sits in a wooded valley of six acres, and is a haven for wildlife and anglers alike: Heron Lake is ideal for children and disabled anglers, having flat banks; the one-acre Kingfisher Lake is named for its most colourful resident; the long-established Willow Lake includes an island. Day tickets are £10 per person.

There is no compromise when it comes to the accommodation, with each lodge offering bags of space and stylish contemporary living, plus a private hot tub on the furnished deck. Recognising that there’s more to breaks at South View than fish, the owners also offer chocolate and champagne ‘hampers’, welcome packs, local produce deliveries and home-baked cakes – all at extra charge. One and two-bedroom lodges are available, with prices from £651 for a three-night weekend this spring.

And newly-listed on WatersideBreaks.com is Rural Roosts set half-way between the Lincolnshire Wolds and the cathedral city of Lincoln. Eight pine lodges are built around the lake which is fished only by guests, at no extra charge.

Each lodge is about 20 metres from the water and as well as four-star standards, each lodge also has its own shed for storing guests’ fishing kit, bikes etc. Some also boast a private hot tub on the deck. Three-night weekends start at £471 this spring.
