Taranaki, New Zealand – not just a Mountain: now a Person!

The New Zealand Government and the local Maori have signed a ‘record of understanding’ that sees Mount Taranaki become a legal personality, effectively granting the mountain the same protections as a living citizen.

A perfect volcanic cone, Mount Taranaki and the Egmont National Park are drawing more visitors since Lonely Planet tipped the Taranaki region in 2016 as one of the best places in the world to visit.

Now the mountain gets additional protection to ensure its natural beauty remains untouched, and that visitors recognize its sacred importance to the eight Maori tribes who view it as an ancestor.

New Zealand specialist and AITO member Silver Fern Holidays says the number of people asking to incorporate Taranaki into a tailor-made tour is increasing, especially from those interested in tackling the one-day walk called the Pouakai Crossing, through the spectacular volcanic landscape.

A 19-day tailor-made tour incorporating the Taranaki region costs from £4,595 per person (twin share) including international flights.
